Pulling a bonded load, what would you do?

Traffic rat is spot on: don’t mess around, cos the guys who are after your load certainly won’t… If you are even slightly in doubt, show an “I am carrying a secure load” card, call 999 and/or drive straight to the nearest police station. The cost of making a car look like a VOSA or police car is small compared to the prize of a full load of whisky, ■■■■ or whatever…

It’s a bit ironic, seeing as how a lot of them drive nowadays.

A lot of drivers have fallen for deception scams, it goes like this ;
A foreign driver is lost in the UK, and asks for directions, a vehicle pulls up, the occupants are wearing a security type hiviz or uniform with the name of the depot where the driver was trying to find.
They say, follow us to the yard, we will unload you there, we have cleared it with your planner.
He unloads the high value load.
His boss rings, asking what time will you arrive as they asking where you are.
The driver replies with ,what do you mean, I have tipped the load and empty now.
Load has gone.Stolen.
Years ago, in some European countries, real police had a night off and got a bit merry.
Their friends borrowed the patrol cars and uniforms and fined foreign drivers.

Suggest you update your status to not living in the real world.

Im going to pick a hole in this one , some or near all are saying : dont stop , keep going , phone the 3 x 999s give details, await response **and** show them the cards . How the buggery dooh dar are they gonna read the cards while driving in-front of you attempting a pull and stop whilst your still on the move  If you keep going its a sure way the Po-lice will attend anyway surely not ? if its a bonafide attempt :open_mouth: :unamused:

Back in the '90’s I used to take bonded tobacco in containers from Southampton dock up to John Player in Nottingham, had two unmarked police cars as escorts, one in front and one behind, very discreet, do they still do this?

As im the most valuable load I carry it would be a judgement call, if any doubt a 999 call or muck about a bit and see if another few proper police cars and even a helichopter turns up, by this point I would be pretty convinced.

Cant imagine how low you would have to be in the crimminal hierachy to be forced to drive a mock up VOSA car though. What next a fake womble mobile.

Showing a high value load card would just confirm their suspicions and make them more determined. Pull up and if in doubt leg it, another good reason for drivers to stay in shape as by the size of some buggers the trailer would be empty before they got out the cab

No, as this was a scam, fake police cars to a fake warehouse…

Forget the police station.
1 ring 3 nines and explained give details of the v.ehicle stopping you and location ask for response.
2. You can go to ANY CROWN PROPERTY ie military camp instalation.

 1. If you do stop don’t open any doors and explain the reasons.

Being a bonded load has no bearing on the case it’s just deemed hi risk hi value.

You sure on this? I’d have thought an unexpected truck with a police- esque type vehicle flashing away behind it swinging into an army camp in these days of heightened vigilance would certainly raise an eyebrow ( or even rifle ) from the sentry  :open_mouth:

I wouldn’t fancy it!

When I was a kid my dad drove the camper van up the private road to a military base where they monitor communications. Two sentries. One in the hut, one out. The one came out and then they both raised their rifles. I was screaming at him to just do a ■■■■■■■ 3 point turn already.

Eventually he did while I hid behind the seats.

But those military bases are absolutely nuts. Delivered into one once.

It’s a bit ironic, seeing as how a lot of them drive nowadays.

This guy had followed the rules by covering up the markings. The stuff he had on it was not Diamond Grade either.

You can’t just buy the stuff unless you are a legitimate business and no one will sell you blue markings unless you can provide evidence you are entitled to use them. Sadly eBay is good for blue lights but to buy new you need clearance (from reputable places).

And yes, I know what I’m talking about.

stagedriver:
A non genuine VOSA vehicle? It’d be pretty hard, time consuming and expensive for someone to replicate all that!

And please don’t dial 999 for god sake. That’s for emergencies. Life or death.

Call 101 instead, your call will still get dealt with but it frees up 999 operators to deal with real issues.

It may seem expensive to replicate a VOSA vehicle BUT ask yourself how much is the cost compared with a load of say 20 plus pallets of booze AND how many times has it already been used and how many in the future.

Using 101 would be a waste of time as your placed in a queue system. The only number to use would be 999 which will get an almost immediate response.

The 999 and 101 systems are answered by the same people, in the same room. A 999 call takes priority but is for immediate life and death situations.

If your call is serious enough when you dial 999 your call will ‘barge in’ to the despatch side of the control room where an officer would be assigned.

If you dial 999 and you wish to query the legitimacy of a vehicle you will be treated as a 101 caller of a higher priority than a general enquiry.

I’m sitting writing this next to my old man who is head of police communications. From my own experience safe measures are in place now a days to prevent a member of the public buying yellow/blue markings.

Anyone can buy yellow/black markings (I used them when I was escorting ab-loads) but lets not forget that VOSA are not exactly going to chase you down and sting your tyres if you don’t stop.

A simple call to the police on 101 stating you have a high value load on and you cannot stop etc is arse covering enough. If VOSA don’t have a 101 style number to call then that’s their problem.

If I was carrying a high value load, which I’ve done many times and I had VOSA try to stop me, I’d call 101 and get them to log the details, report it to my office and they can deal with any backlash. What’s so hard about that?

Yeah don’t make the mistake I did of speaking to the sentry. What I was “meant” to do, was speak to the (Actually very friendly) MoD Police chap in the hut. I hadn’t been sure who to speak to, so I played it safe and went for who I thought was the gaffer, the Sergeant with the rifle. Cue a bit of a bollocking but I didn’t know any different.

Can’t speak for the blue lights but I make signs / graphics for a living and yes, you can buy diamond grade reflective vinyl in many colours from several places, no need for anything other than a big wallet, it’s about £50 for a piece about 3’ x 2’.
But also it doesn’t even need to be reflective to look convincing, specially while going along at 60 - 70 mph.
