Just out of interest, why are 7.5tonners called puddle jumpers?

slang for a light aircraft not travelling very far or making many stops - jumping between puddes and guess at some point it also got used for 7.5t trucks as they prob used to be only used for short journeys and do lots of drops in quick sucession…

no doubt one of the old timers in here can enlighten us youngun…

for the same reason children are called ankle snappers, children are only small n they jump in puddles

To humiliate the driver and to remind him not to mess with the big boys

Oi…!!! I’m stuck in a puddlejumper even tho I have me ‘C’ licence. There’s nowt going round my way in the bigboy stuff!!

But am always looking…

I believe they use the term puddle jumper in the TV series Stargate Atlantis which is for a spacecraft many times smaller than the normal large version

Of course it could be that the water in the middle of the stargate looks like a puddle and they go from one puddle to another

i always thought it was because puddles were too deep for little wagons so they called em puddle jumpers? first time i heard it said was my dad talking about an f7.

used to be the nick name for the citreon 2CV. only car i know that could lean over at 60 degrees and still have all 4 wheels on the ground!

Ken.

It’s an old slang term for a small car or van. Blaster Bates describes an Austin 7 by this name on one of his records which dates from the late 60’s.

On old family friend had a fiat 126 and that was always referred to as a puddle jumper because it had to jump due to it’s small size otherwise it would sink.

there are a few “puddle jumpers” at my place and they are so small they just look silly. Never had to drive one, but last time I was in the cab of one, I nearly fell out whilst looking for the second step.

Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard came up with the name as he thought the event horizon looked like a puddle. They are officially called gateships by the the us air force.

Im a stargate geek
