I have been looking into my crystal ball and see very dark clouds on the horizon.
Firstly, the rate of VAT increases to 20% in January 2011 and this will cost the average household £425 next year. We have the cuts in public spending starting, 6% a year for four years. There is a lack of confidence among a large section of the workforce about job security, and I think it is likely that unemployment will rise and property values fall.
All of this reduces demand for transport. I see next year as being far worse than this. Any thoughts?
I just read a report that reckons it will take 14 years to get the job market back up to pre recession levels as many companies are still reluctant to commit to new positions.
Reuters.
The rate at which British recruiters filled permanent jobs slowed to its weakest in 10 months in August, and the industry fears a sharper slowdown when public spending cuts takes effect, a survey showed on Wednesday.
I think though that the newly proposed tax on foreign trucks may have a positive impact on UK hauliers providing that reflects the true cost of trucking in the UK and obviously that it actually happens.
We’re talking about Tories here!!! Since when did a Tory give a toss about anyone in Historical terms.Watch and learn over the next few months as its gonna be a bad one for everyone who anint got a pot to ■■■■ in The Rich will notice nothing yet again and the poor will suffer yet again(public service cuts and benefit cuts) When are the Rich gonna pay for the money they have stolen from the country through tax dodging? Nothing is going to change in Britain until the thieves are weeded out and thrown out or thrown in Jail.Lets have a Government with a Pair for a change
I’m not convinced the VAT rate rise will make a blind bit of difference, as few if any hauliers deal directly with consumers (or non VAT registered businesses), and those companies who do (Tesco etc) have already driven their transport costs down to rock-bottom. Besides, whatever they could claw-back through cost reductions (if anything at all!) would still be dwarfed by their additional liability to the treasury, as transport is still a tiny portion of the cost base of most consumer-led enterprises.
I do think it will be a tough year for business in general, but no worse than the last 2 years.

You can’t blame people for moving their businesses to tax havens when the government steals 50% of your profit and gives it to the work-shy to sit of their arses all day drinking Stella, illegal wars, illegal immigrants etc etc etc. My own company is registered in a tax haven on the OECD “grey” list, so you can add me to your “tax dodging” list as well . The people you need to direct your blame stick at are those in Government for creating the welfare state that this country has become. They are the ones that have chosen to make the UK undesirable to businesses and I highly doubt that if you ran a business yourself that you’d have such a low opinion of those that choose not to receive a royal financial shafting from the Government.
Stanley Mitchell:
The till was FULL, the UK PLC balance sheet was solid gold, only to be raped by the two clowns, as admitted in TWO autobiogs out recently
I shall read the books when they are available in the Library. I refuse to sponsor anymore of their hilarious camaraderie and play fighting, they were off on a jolly for 13 years as though it was a game of cops and robbers
the more this government rips off the man in the street with increases in tax, then that same man will be looking for a bargain.
these bargains will only be available from abroad. so that’s where we come in, and make a mint.
Labour raped the country prior to the Conservatives in 1979 and has raped the country in the last 13 years. The Conservative government had to implement drastic measures in 1979 as does the present government. Don’t any of you socialists see the trend? Labour spends whilst the Conservatives have to introduce cuts to stop the country becoming bankrupt and the Conservatives get slated because of Labour’s spending. We had a burgeoning treasury when Labour took over in 1997, 13 years later and we’re trillions in the red. What do you expect the government to do?
