I’d like to get all nostalgic and say I miss it but… 
If you think of the changes in terms of health and safety from them to now, what will it be like in the industry in 40 years from now? No standing on bed of lorry, no hi viz, no gloves. Eye protection. In 40 years time someone will be having the conversation about how we do the job now.

Miss having the coal dust grind into the splits on your hands? Miss the way your finger nails sort of hung there? Took over a year of roping and sheeting before my hands recovered from the coal and became merely hard!

Yeah I probably should have finished the sentence “I’d like to get all nostalgic and say I miss it but…” I don’t 
Roping and sheeting is another story though, what I remember mostly about it is the water squeezing out onto me when pulling on a wet rope, and trying to fold sheets on windy days or having to lift heavy wet sheets onto the lorry 
Christ I need to find where I left my rose tinted glasses
