Prohibition notice

Ah, the legal [zb] is EEC Legislation (Directive 3821/85, Annex 1B) if anyone can be bothered to look that up

But hold on aren’t the head units on magnums under the dash/ to the side and under some if the old lf 7.5 tonners are to the right and under the dash

I drove a Renault Midlum 7.5 tonner for a bit and the tacho head was below the steering wheel to the right. However, any tacho related warning messages were clearly displayed on the dash display, the dash even showed your driving time. So I suppose that covers them against this:

“”“Visual warnings shall be clearly recognisable by the user, shall be situated in the driver’s field of vision and shall be clearly legible both by
day and by night.”"

Yeah, if it’s integrated with the dash computer then one would imagine the unit itself could be anywhere.

in my last job my regular vehicle went in for an MOT it was on hire from fraikin, whilst it was in they supplied an Izuzu Hino 7.5t the tacho head was on the underside of the dash to the left hand side of centre, over the week I had it i left my card in overnight twice and forgot to put it on break a couple of times as you would completely forget it was there

it was a daf 7.5t , 57 reg

Think that the nice officer may well have to withdraw his prohibition. The document linked to by th2013 showing red, amber and green zones applies to 3.5 tonne and below and not to larger vehicles. The requirement in Regulation 3831/85 is that the VU must be able to be operated from the driver’s seat, it does not say how easy or difficult that operation should be. The requirement that you can see the display directly is covered by the orange tacho warning light in the instrument cluster.
The operator is best advised to discuss this prohibition with the dvsa before doing anything with the vehicle. Iirc daf LFs get their tacho put to yhe right snd below the steering wheel.

The newer LFs I’ve driven 61,12,etc have it up above the windscreen.

So looking up into the roof isn’t taking your eyes off the road ? Wish mine was in the dash where I could see it, don’t know what’s happening in front when I’m looking at tacho going down a hill, don’t want to overspeed !!!

re ,the requirement that the vu must be able to be operated from the drivers seat. this is not possible as I (ok im built on the cuddly side )could not even see it never mind operate it . mr vosa sat in the drivers seat and took photographs and also from the ground with me sitting in the drivers seat to demonstrate /prove his point, my knee was level with the tacho. I doubt a skinny supple youngster could manage to operate the unit without getting out of the truck.

That can be a bit of a problem admittedly, I usually get around that by glancing at the big speedo thing in the middle of the dash.

Yep.

As they were also on Renault Premiums, circa 53 plate. They’re actually above your right knee, and you can only see them as you getting in/out of the cab.
