Programme about driver shortage

Are there not a load of firms these days that actually go out of their way to emply “halfway house” people under the rehabilitation of offenders act?

…You can pay them all pittance, knowing that if they moan and make waves - it might all blow up into a “broken probation” or something… :bulb:

also ex cons is a no go,i can’t see a lot of companies allowing them on site especially high security, docks and other sensitive areas.

I’m not quite sure how these places would know they are ex-cons? I don’t think they have access to drivers’ criminal records.

There is no driver shortage. It’s virtually a minimum wage job nowadays, the market is flooded with cheap labour from the other side of the River Oder and even with Brexit the genie won’t be going back into the bottle anytime in the foreseeable future.

Not sure, “Rehabilitation Of Offenders”?
Prospective employees, if asked, are obliged to give details of convictions. Minor offences, when young, disappear quickly, but serious crimes with long sentences don’t.
The employer may not have access to records, but can take action if records aren’t declared when asked for.
.
(If a serial hijacker doesn’t come clean at interview, you can sack him!)

I think it’s to do with the ‘spent’ sentences - it if is spent they do not have to declare (as fits the ‘Rehabilitation of Offenders’ idea - to prevent vicious circle of “crime” - “can’t get job” - “back to crime”). Of course, this doesn’t apply in jobs which would require a DBS check (of which there are a couple of types)

If there really was a driver shortage, then the wage wouldn’t be £9 an hour. Simples.

You beat me to it Harry.
The fact that the average pay is about 11 quid an hour, is glaringly obvious that there is NO driver shortage…if ther was it would be a competitive market for drivers, the better ones demanding a decent wage.
There is however a shortage of PROPER drivers today, but an abundance of licence holders. :unamused:

(8) It’s a shame that I’m finally left with an ‘8’

The average up here robroy is around a tenner with quite a few paying £9 an hour,
The latest thing here is dressing up the job advert saying £130 a day,so people think £750 a week that’s ok but the firms In question are all wanting you to max your hours so a 15 hr shift is less than a tenner,
