Just a quick one what do you think is a reasonable amount of profit to make each week after you have payed out for every thing .
10%. That’s after paying yourself a reasonable wage, a good drivers wage or above.
A … pound and a Mars bar
What I think is realistic and what is actually realistic are two very different things
10% is a good number in today’s world, but that is 10% to you, or the company if limited, that’s after taxes and every expense you can think of and some you can’t are taken into account
I think this is a thing a lot of people forget, I pay myself a set wage 12 times a year at the beginning of every month regardless on how much I’ve turned over that month, and that is what it is a wage exactly the same as I would get if I worked for x y z haulage company, then obviously my standing and running costs have to come out and generally I would be honest and say overall 10% is the maximum amount of profit left over sometimes I think is it worth it all but then I think how lucky I am to have a nice two seated Merc n not a mediocre mondeo
To be honest I think that if you can pay yourself a decent wage and cover ALL other costs then any profit is a good profit.
We are in one of the worst recessions in living memory and if at the end of it I come out with a business that has survived and made a bit of profit then I will be a happy man.

I think there’s a big difference between the economic object of working as an owner driver compared to running a transport company. There’s no point in losing work by applying a rate that’s a lot more than enough to just pay yourself enough to earn a decent standard of living out of.Trying to earn more than enough to cover the costs and a reasonable living wage is just likely to end up in the situation of a truck parked up earning nothing in which case no profit and no wages either because there’s no point or incentive in a company subbing out work to an owner driver if they can do it themselves for the same price.
