So, guys and gals, you have just had a ■■■■ (rubbish) nights sleep (for whatever reason) you might have even had a couple. What do you do? telephone your boss and say you can’t drive today! they are going to love you for that aren’t they! BUT, you have a morel/professional responsibility to ensure you are fit to do your shift. so yes your tacho says you have have had sufficient time off, we have all been there I am sure but what did you do?

I once phoned in sick at midnight for a 3am start because I hadn’t yet managed to sleep. I just told them I had the trots.
That was the one & only time I have ever been off sick & I had previously gone in on the back of only 2/3 hours kip and suffered through it. I decided enough was enough of early starts & have worked afternoons and nights ever since.
That is a good point Tim.It only takes half a second to fall asleep at the wheel.
The truck gets the rest but not the driver.Commuting to and from the truck is another issue that needs changing in the rules.
Nine hours is not enough to have a proper meal, wash and quality time with family or friends.
Being tired driving is just as dangerous as being drunk.
Coming back to work after a holiday.
A long flight with jet lag then adjusting to time zones.
SAFETY FIRST
Tired drivers are potential killers
If boss gets the arse then ask them if they want a driver who is too tired to drive a car on the road let alone their LGV
Grow some nuts and get on with the job. If you need a couple of extra rests during the day take them.

Just goes to show how “professional” you are, remember your words if or when you have an accident through being tired.

What a stupid response typical of current health and safety culture. Back in the real world drivers work all the time when their tired. So as I’m not on hgv today and tomorrow I’ve got to be in millan in the morning and yes I’m driving both ways
There is only ONE person responsible and that is the DRIVER s/he is the only person who can make that decision. The buck stops at you and only you for that, nobody else end of.

What a stupid response
If you are referring to this below then I agree …

The answer to which clearly lies in the Neanderthal past
If you cause injury to other road users through driving when too tired, then you go to jail. Sounds fair to me.
Which why you take a break if your tired it simple. Do any of you actually wok fir living or do you take a day off if you have a bad nights sleep
I don’t know what’s coming to this forum. Unless you watch tv with feet up at the wheel while having a snooze on your one hit to Singapore then don’t bother posting. Long live the keyboard warrior
Another version is that you go out do your 7 or 8 hours which have mentally fatigued your brain due to excessive contraflow on a motorway and time consuming work.
You arrive back at base and your sent out again . right to refuse or risk falling asleep.

I hope you’re never anywhere near me on the road.
There are many times that drivers will drive tired. But if you’ve had no sleep at all and did a 15 hour shift the day before, and you’re happy to embark on another 15 hour shift with just a few short naps if you’re really lucky, then you’re an idiot.
Read the following:

Perhaps you will then ‘grow a pair’. Better still, maybe then you will actually act like a professional driver.

So if too tired to drive when you need to start out for work you condone driving your car and then your LGV when unsafe
That requires either a yes or no answer
Guys just get in the real world instead of your rose tinted one.
Truckulent
You dont even know me so coming out with stupid quotes about not being near you on the road. And yes I am happy doing a 15 hr shift on 3-5 hrs sleep and no I’m would not be over tired am I unsafe rog you’ve no idea what amount of sleep I need also
Some of what alix776 is saying is correct drivers are driving tired all the time, go to most yards and look at drivers most could sleep standing up. Any job where you may start in the middle of the night work 15 hours then sleep on the side of the road for 9 then do it all again is going to have tired workers.

Jesus. Put me in the Truckulent camp, stay the eff away from me on the road. You sound like a serious accident waiting to happen.
The OPs question was what do you do if you’ve had a [zb] nights sleep, I pretty much agree with alix776, I don’t think anyone is suggesting that you should drive half asleep but if you’re tired there are ways of getting through the day reasonably safely.
If you want an excuse to stop work you’ll find one, if you want to get the job done like you’ve agreed to, tired or not you’ll find a way of doing it reasonably safely.
