So there I was, heading West along the M4 from j11 to join the A34…was sat behind a tanker from j12 and started catching him on the series of inclines between j12 &13, traffic was quite busy and he was soon up to 54/55mph so I stayed put and planned my overtake for the longish, final hill before J13. Sure enough, he dropped down to 50 and as I was reasonably light and sat at 54, I eased out and passed him. Get to the top of the hill, check the mirror, i’m passed but like to leave a nice gap before pulling back in if I don’t get a flash. Approaching the 1.5mile marker for j13 and he’s up the side of me, cab to cab and still pulling away. This left me no other option than to ease off, mindful of the cars that were behind me, and slot back in behind, about half mile from j13. We both came off at j13 and got caught at the lights, so I gave him a little toot on the horn and as he looked over, i gave him the ‘shrugged shoulder/hands wtf gesture’. He showed the same and went North whilst I went into Newbury to drop one of the lads off before heading North. Obviously my fault for not cutting his nose off, allowing me more than enough time to exit the M4. His CF was obviously no match for my Scania up the hills, but maybe I couldn’t see properly in my n/s mirror as he was one of the ‘Superstars’ who runs with his front fogs on! Did I say it was a plain White unit/trailer, with Turners on the side of the door? And the reg? That was …
Calm down, that man! There’s many out there a lot worse than that. Just have to accept th’idiots as part of life’s rich tapestry.
What i dont get is, if you were quicker up the hills than him, how did he make up so much ground to start to pass you up the inside again?
Im not being pedantic, just trying to picture the scenario like
But yes, Some are nice but i do find some tanker drivers can be ‘a little stuffy’ putting it politely!
You’re just jealous that they have prettier uniforms than you!
I had similar with a Tesco decker before Xmas going north on the M1. I overtook going up the hill got just past his cab when he took it out of gear on me as we went over the hill left me standard in lane 2 I was doing 60 down hill, worst still an Irish lad went past us both in lane 3 (4 lanes)

faster on the flat was he, plus he had more momentum at the bottom! And our uniform ain’t that bad, Navy Blue with the logo on left breast…not multi-coloured efforts!
I don’t understand why you actually went for the overtake.
Your quote " last hill before junction 13 " later quote " we both came off at junction 13 "
So you knew you were coming off the next junction, so why go for the overtake, knowing that he could catch you up as the hills leveled off.
He wasn’t to know that you were going to Newbury, he knew he was exiting and could have maybe thought you were staying on the M4. You may have missed the flash as well.
If it had been me I would have thought that you were going straight on too, not expecting to have a driver leave an overtake just before he was going to exit a motorway. Why didn’t you just stick behind him seeing as you were exiting at J13 ?
M1 south this morning returning from Dunstable mixer was running slow so ipulled out to overtake similar situation comes racing back up the inside of me and overtakes the vehicle in front of him in the left lane! ■■■■■■■ idiot
makes it worse the ■■■■ was wearing a hoody with it up over his head! Needless to say I gave it large on the air horns and gave my first stroker gesture of 2013!
Both were as bad as each other. Why did you bother overtaking him on the hill if you knew he’d have you on the downhill that invariably follows going up a hill?
Obviously if you had to wait for such a long climb there wasn’t that much difference…

Had nothing to do with him not knowing where I was coming off, nor me not knowing where he was coming off…I was faster up the hill and I wanted to get past. I was passed him near the crest and wanted to leave a nice gap before I pulled in, irrespective of him flashing or not. As you correctly say, I could’ve missed the flash, but with his headlamps & fog lights on (no fog/mist) it was difficult to spot. He obviously didn’t want a slower vehicle in front so came up the inside. Think about it…when I started the move, I was probably best part of 2.5 miles out from the junction…buy the time he had come up the inside and there was room for me to get back in, the road was running out…I’ll go up to j14 if it happens again…me bad and unprofessional and I should know better
PS if you are unaware, I work nights, so it was dark!

how the ■■■■ can you say an irish lad went past you both so you can tell he is irish cause of way he drives ?

You obviously don’t travel that stretch of the M4 very often and I didn’t ‘have’ to wait, but the other hills were shorter and his speed didn’t drop enough to make a move
In the O.P’s defence though, in my experiance you cant read an overtake 100% right 100% of the time, no matter how many years youve been driving trucks, sometimes it’l go wrong no matter how good you think you are.
Ive had it myself before now, the guy who’s just overtaken me is starting to lose it on a hill, Il back off and let him in front, its less stress for both of us and everyone goes home less stressed. The leaving the truck in lane 2 game is for ■■■■■■■■■ AFAIC.
Ooh, one of my colleagues in being brain dead shocker. Weren’t me though, I was running down from Manchester to London

I wasn’t having a go I thought it was ace, Irish unit and trailer kind of gave it away, and if your gonna say how did you know he was Irish , I didn’t just like I didn’t know he was a he and not a she. Don’t get your knickers in a twist.

I know how you feel boy i"ve had Turners tankers doing the same to me on many occasion on the M25 before today. I have always thought their driver"s where brain dead.
