Professional driver demolishes railway bridge in Luton

Was the subject the headlines in Luton’s local rag a few weeks ago? :open_mouth:

Delivered in Luton the other day, not been for there for a while but this rail bridge

Is now just 2 huge piles of rubble each side of the road.

Did one of those over night pallet double deckers (driven by agency driver) hit the bridge so hard he demolished it?

I don’t see any bridge height markers on the bridge, are there any further back up the road? If not a double deck driver should be able to go under there without a problem.

Any idea if it’s a legal requirement to have markers actually on the bridge or do signs placed before the bridge suffice?

In total six bridges have been demolished in the area in the last few weeks as part of the new guided busway project, the bridge in the picture is one of them. Some of the demolished bridges were too narrow and will be replaced by bridges wide enough to allow two of the guided buses to pass each other while others were just too old.

The bridge strike in the papers was the one near Leagrave station I believe, it is often hit.

I always thought they have to be marked on the actuall bridge. But anyway if u zoom in on that pic it looks like quite a high bridge but probably right on the 16’6 limit. Having said that though even on motorways when they have arched bridges some are really quite low on the hard shoulder side, I’ve often thought to myself that’s no way 16’6 if a double decker went underneath on the hard shoulder.

Its the train passangers i feel sorry for then, sitting on the train waiting for the bridge to be re-built

there was one low bridge in luton that took you up a hill that had a car park for a business just before it on the left, was lost one day and that came in handy once to revese as couldnt fit under into   going back few years though so prob been demolished by now.

thanks coffee.

Saw a Brakes driver from Grantham trying to get a DD under Bingham bridge Saturday morning :unamused: :unamused: Its not like you can miss the flashing electronic signs unless your carry a white stick.

Shame it’s only bridges they are demolishing in Luton. And why do a lot of people walk round in their pajamas? They don’t half look silly!

Don’t worry, there hasn’t been a train over those bridges for years.
