Pro driver: still a commodity, or now an asset?

Is the era of ‘bums on seats’ over? Now that it is common knowledge you can’t just conjure up a decent driver, and if you have any, they should be appreciated. Have any drivers noticed a change in attitude from above?

Nope, not noticed any change tbh. Having said that the opinion “you drivers are ten a penny, crack on or I’ll replace you at the drop of a hat” is that firmly entrenched that it’ll take a lot to change it. Only my opinion of course.

Same as above, in my opinion they still don’t care about retaining the drivers they have, still treated like crap, spoken to like we’re the lowest of the low, until you hand in your resignation, as I have done, then they want you to stay!!!

A change in attitude from who though? General public - no. Office flunkies - no. Pointy shoes - no. Customers - no. The authorities - no. Oh, hang on that was a full house.

I’ve heard on good authority that Stobarts are sending out letters to drivers that have recently jacked to go elsewhere,.asking them why they have gone,.and if they would like to come back. :open_mouth: .
A mate of mine was one of them, …His words were…‘‘■■■■ em’’

Attitudes have to change now. Was interesting to read comments from general public to news that supermarkets may run low of stock because of shortage of drivers.
They are wiser to the situation than you realise. Lots of mentions of wage and status.
Pointy shoe brigade will have to start thinking up recruitment strategies.
Not enough to have an ad on the back of a trailer, saying ‘Eddie wants you’ or whatever.
The only solution that I can see is a complete change in approach to employment status of drivers, facilities en route and treatment of drivers on site. That is before wage increases…productivity increases would help pay for rise.
I know that sounds like a pipe dream, but can things stay as they are for long?

Of course not. The globalists will not let it. As I’ve said before, enjoy the short-lived pay lifts while they last because the Indians and Filipinos will be on their way soon and you’ll be back down at a tenner an hour doing any 5 from 7.

I was once told I wish we had more drivers like you , that same person when asked if he could help me out with some short shifts / early finishes as I was helping the nurses with my brother , lifting him so they could wash him , carrying him to his bed , and I just wanted to spend what time he had left with him as he was dieing of mnd , his reply was I have 20 drivers with problems ( I went mental )
Against that when my lad Darren was still born my boss then was a absolute star , he couldn’t do enough , just said I’m here any time day or night , ring me if you want a chat , forget work , just get yourself & p ok , sent us a lovely card & flowers , not surprised as he was the same when my dad died , just get to Bristol , give us a bell to tell me your ok
2 nd one didn’t just value you as a worker , he was a friend , mate , a decent human being who would help you when you needed help .
I valued him that’s for sure , he helped me out in some really dark times

The public have a perception of the average lorry driver being some kind of “Pork Chop Steering Wheel Attendent”…

Funnily enough though, the price of Pork has now gone through the roof on the open market…

Stranger things have happened, what with a Barrel of Oil being worth less than a single sheet of toilet paper around a year ago…

Funnily enough, I thought about that yesterday when an XPO reefer started an overtake just as we were about to pass the one mile marker for Corley services. Nothing wrong with that, and as he passes, I idely noticed that he seemed of a Asian Continent complexion, something I noticed because they are not that common as drivers. He gets nearly past, when he starts to indicate, a bit early, but heho. Being the “not in a massive hurry type”, and my ■■■■■ being sufficiently large not needing to compensate by attempting to thwart someone’s overtake, I eased off and flashed him in, thinking " i hope he’s not wanting to get off for the services, nah that would be… WOOOHHHAAA"…

You guessed it, he swings it across, and pulls off into the services… :unamused: Welcome to driving, Bombay stylee…
Coming to a yard near you soon…

As I said 20 years ago until we all decide to take a week off at same time, nothing will change

Never been my experience.can you elaborate?

Ditto…“treated like a number”
Don’t want a ■■■■■■■■…Don’t want to be their mate…Don’t want to know anything about them.

Keys,notes,gone.

Don’t you read the news? There’s a shortage of drivers, they love us out there

Asset? Asses more like  , these firms have downtrodden so many good lads they are into a routine of condescending ignorance. I always said this bringing in cheap workers would backfire… It has now…

Supply and demand has now reversed on the employers so you might start seeing “some” respect, well until the big wigs push hard for more cheap grafters, probably from the third world this time though…
