Okay so, my driving test (Car license!) is literally right around the corner on Tuesday. It will be my second attempt as my first attempt well I got 2 serious and 2 minors So I shall be having to make a second attempt.
I’m just wondering if anyone has any tips to not let the nerves get to me, I know the whole ‘Think of how you felt when you failed the first time, if you don’t want to feel like that again. Pass it next time’ But it’s just the nerves of how things are coming along, not to mention usually when I make a second attempt at things it goes worser than the first attempt Not sure if thats just me though!!
As someone who suffers nerves when in test situations , theres not really much you can do except try and work them to your advantage , get a good nights sleep night before even if it means a brandy before bedtime (and I mean 1 not several) in the past I have tried rescue remedy and did seem to help might be placebo but hey if it works , just remember all he looking for is you are gonna be safe to drive on your own , so imagine your taking ya mam to the shops or something like that , might help relax you enough to not make any serious mistakes
good luck Ill cross me fingers on tues for you
Thanks for the advice folks, i dont think it will be as bad as last time as my test is first thing in the morning so at least I’ll have it over and done with. Unlike my last test the lesson before hand i did a mock test and failed it with 3 minors, actual test i got 2 serious, the mock test after that i failed with 1 serious. And i did a mock yesterday which i got a pass so confidence for my test is up a little bit but not enough to make me cocky!
Lets hope I can repeat yesterdays performance and het that pass
Try Kalms from Boots, it is a natural remedy to relax you and aid sleep, it is made of lettuce leaves which aid natural sleep.
A hot milk drink will help too, like Horlicks, the malt will relax you too.
A hot bath, no tv the night before.
Not sure if it will help, but I took my class 2 test yesterday, 2nd attempt. I took a few seconds, when I had the chance, to remind myself ‘I can do this’.
I passed my car test many years ago, 2nd attempt. My 1st test I was out for the full hour, my 2nd test I was out for not very long! I passed on Friday 13th, with a tasty female examiner . Another thing to remember is, you’ve been there once already, you know what to expect now, it may help you to relax a little and concentrate on your driving.
Cheers toby! And thanks for that suffolk i get what you mean, most of my family and friends said to think of the first one as a practice. To be fair on my first test i was a wreck leading upto it, as the last lesson before again was a mock te st, and to say i did badly was an understatement. But this time round I’m more confident, as i said before i keep thinking 'you know what you felt like the first time you failed, don’t make yourself feel like that again. Also last lesson this time before the test again was a mock test, and ironically i thought i had it failed as at the start i was asked to stop on an incline, i managed to stall it and roll it back a touch, but my instructor told me that it affected nobody and i gained control within seconds so if anything it was just a minor. And usually my instructors quite harsh on the marking on mock tests so can’t of been too bad
2 days to go until the big day, and by the time most folk are out of their pits I will have my results. And as dad said failure is not an option . Be good if i can get my new job and pass my test…next on the agenda would be putting the euro millions on
I’m the same, I always suffer from terrible nerves during testing which leads me to making stupid mistakes. When I was taking my Cat A test a few years back, I was a complete wreck and totted up quite a few minors on things I had never had problems with before. Thankfully I managed to pass on the first attempt, but I think only just
Since then, I’ve thought about that day a fair bit (and discussed it with my brother who is now a motorcycle instructor) and I think my biggest problem personally was that I was putting too much importance on getting everything perfect. I was constantly over-thinking everything and trying to ride in a way that I thought the examiner would want to see. I was also trying to ride for two people, constantly watching where the examiner was to give him space to pull out with me etc. (not something that really applies to anything but the bike test, but still) rather than just concentrating on doing what I already knew how to do. This put me entirely out of my comfort zone, and caused me to ride in a way that I hadn’t really been used to.
Now I’m looking toward Cat C and C+E, I hope that I’ve learned my lesson from that experience. I’m going into it now from the perspective that I should just drive how I would normally drive – in the way that my instructor has trained me – and try not to ‘second guess’ what the examiner wants to see on the day. It’s not that I’m going to drive like a maniac one way or the other (well, I hope not!). The examiner should be looking to see that you’re a safe driver up to the required standard, not that you’re instantly the best driver in the world and failing you if you were not
Anyway, as mentioned, I can’t really speak to the Cat C since I haven’t actually done it myself yet; but I thought I’d relay my personal thoughts on what caused my own crippling nerves in case some of it maybe helped.
Best of luck for your upcoming test, let us know how it goes!
I reckon everyone struggles with the car test, its all new. I got my bike licence on the first shot, why does it all seem so much easier when the examiner is in another vehicle? lol
don’t take this the wrong way, but are you sure you’re ready for the test? it may just be nerves sending you to bits, but from what you posted it sounds like you could do with a few more lessons for your confidence and to polish up?
I wish you good luck for the next test, can’t really help you much with nerves, different causes and fixes for different folk, what helps me probably won’t help you. I think a bit of anxiety gives you an edge, helps you focus and that sort of thing. too much and you get panic, that’s where the silly mistakes come in. I’ve read it times and times again, someone posts that they did something and thought they’d failed, then they relaxed and when they got back they got the good news.
Thanks for the comments, and baz I can assure you I’m more than ready for my test on Tuesday. The only thing worrying me is getting the same result as last time, a result that I don’t want to hear ever again. The only result that I’m willing to accept is ‘I’m pleased to tell you you’ve passed!’ I have a lot of confidence in my driving ability (so does my instructor by all accounts) in fact he told me that the not so good drivers could get a test route where traffic is fairly calm and is pretty driver friendly but the best of drivers could get a complete ■■■■test route where the student could make a split second mistake making the test a fail. In my instructors words, that’s what happened in my last test. But I won’t be making the same mistakes again thats for sure!
The only thing thats making me nervous is the big weight passing my test could potentially take off my shoulders and one slip up well rather not go there Will be away from here after tomorrow morning/afternoon anyway to give myself a chance to relax. So hopefully I shall come back with the good news. Best part being my test is first thing in the morning so by the time most folk have just got up I’ll have been and done my test and hopefully celebrating by then!
Someone else recently mentioned eating a banana as it slowly digests and keeps you alert
Yes, this. I’ve eaten two bananas on all of my tests, one 15 mins before and the other right before. I went from being the nervous to really wanting to show the examiner I could drive the vehicle more than well enough to pass his tests There’s apparently a slow release of potassium and this keeps you alert… so they say anyway.
