Pre employment medical

Hi guys I’m looking for some help. I’m getting lined up for some tanker work, the employer is asking for a pre employment medical, I’ve never heard of one is it the same as a drivers medical? I know to stay away from the GP so where can i get one done? I’m in Wirral.

I have seen a number of times on here. Drivers saying not to go to the GP to save a few quid.

Why would you not go to your doctor for a thorough (and proper) medical to save say £50?

You only live once kids…

Who says the GP will be any better?

Lots of companies give potential employees medicals before offering them jobs, its often a sign the job is worth having, ie proper pay and proper full sick pay.

All such medicals i’ve had were done on the company premises, and obviously all paid for by them.

Well, it is up for question of course, but…

If you find something wrong in the medical, you will then go to your GP I guess?

Yeah its a decent job. Is a pre employment medical just another term for a driver medical then or are they 2 different medicals?

It may vary depending on what the new job entails, all the usual checks but may be some others depending on the likely products you will be shifting, ie hearing/lung capacity.

No it is a different one. Main check is that you are fit for the job, normally blood pressure, lung function, eyesight and hearing. Some check for mobility and even do an ECG.

You will probably have a drug and alcohol test as well. Just remember they want to employ you so not normally too onerous

They just asked me to book one so it wont be job specific so do i just go for a hgv medical or will i need to ask for a.pre employment medical? Which im struggling to find

Any idea where i can get one done?

I would ask the company not us. I had a medical for a school crossing patrol but failed it, but the council booked me into a Well Man Clinic and paid for my DPS.

In answer to drivers using or not using your own GP, it is simply down to cost and availability.

My Dad had his HGV medical done by our family doctor, he passed with flying colours and then died on his test doing a hill start!

I changed doctors [emoji849]

Surely if an employer requires a pre-employment medical then this should be carried out by their appointed doctor and at their expense?

When I returned to HGV driving I saw my GP for the medical, he read out the questions on the medical form and I gave him the answers, it cost me £132.

The next HGV medical I had was in a place that looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for a decade, the doctor read out the questions on the medical form and I gave him the answers, it cost me £15.

The only difference between the two medicals was £117 :frowning:

Now it takes a month to get an appointment with my GP.

Why would anyone go to their GP for a HGV medical when you can pay £50 and have it sorted in a few days.

My medical (45) was held in a health spa in Llanelli, It was very thorough and professional and a third of the price that my GP wanted, I even linked it here > viewtopic.php?f=13&t=19955&p=2545409#p2000201

The HGV medical is a set of precise questions. A “pre employment medical” may or may not be as precise.
You really should ask what is expected, whether they supply a questionnaire, as otherwise it’ll be a “piece of string” affair with different issues checked by different doctors. And did they specify a doctor? Or could a nurse or other person do it?
A pre employment medical will likely be different for our famous shelf-stacked and a prospective jet-fighter pilot.
You need to find out what they are really talking about. And if they don’t know what they are talking about, maybe form an impression of the company…

Pre-employment medicals are nothing new, been around with some Companies for years.
Usually they are carried out by a “Company Doctor”,who is usually on a retainer and is on call as and when he/she is needed.
The last Company I worked for it was routine to have an appointment made at the Doctors Medical Centre if you had been off work for sometime for some reason,OR to certify you where fit to work for the Company
