lots of chargers for SONY, no idea which one i want. maybe an inverter would be easier. it would allow me to charge my other mobile too since i cant find a charger for that either. if computers can all use something like a USB connector why cant mobiles and laptops all use the same power sockets as each other? :imp:

If you’re that confused, give us the full model number of the laptop (same with phone) and get recommendations for 24v chargers that will plug ‘n’ go.

the laptop is a SONY VAIO vgn nr32l
nokia N95 (has a dual voltage charger and a USB lead)
samsung j600 (which will be in a drawer when the N96 comes out and replaces the N95 as my primary phone)

According to Sony, the VAIO VGN NR32L laptop mains charger is 19.5V / 4.7A. This works out around 90 Watts and would be fine to draw through either a 12V or 24V cig socket.

Don’t worry when searching if you can’t find your model or laptop. All you need to know is this:

Input: 12 OR 24V.
Output: 19.5V / 4.7A (voltage should be around 19V / current can be more as the laptop will only draw what it needs)
Plug: Outside diameter 6.5mm / inside diameter 4.3mm / pin inside barrel 1.35mm / barrel length 10.5mm.
Polarity: Outside of barrel connector is negative / inside is positive.

£45 to your door isn’t a bad price (CLICKY LINK HERE)

Other than that, dodge the monkey at Maplins and take a look at their 120W laptop car adaptor and see if the figures stack up (don’t know if it’s up for handling 24V)

The Nokia DC-4 car charger will work on the N95 & N96. It is 12/24V (output 5.7V / 890mA). Best and try and find a pukka one as the pound shop ones are crap. (they usually have either lower voltage or lower current (amps) output and won’t charge properly.

I have an E61 and the original mains charger lead (AC-4) was ■■■■■■ it broke easily due to the thin cable going into the tiny plug. I replaced it with a Nokia mains charger with the larger plug (ACP-12X — 5.7V / 800mA) and use the 3.5mm to 2.0mm converter lead (CA-44) which came in the box. Only use it with a 5.7V / 800mA output charger as some old Nokias have 3.6V chargers which don’t have enough oomph to charge the battery. 5.7V chargers will charge 3.6V phones (I’ve never had any problems)

Actually, given that a Samsung charger would be (5v / 700mA), it’s not far off what a Nokia charger kicks out. Scrub what I said above about the DC-4 and:

a) Get a Nokia LCH-12 old school car charger with a 3.5mm plug. This 12/24V car charger has a rated output of 5.7V / mA.
b) Use a CA-44 converter and you then have the ability to charge all Nokias with the wee 2mm plugs as well as all the old ones.
c) Get hold of a Nokia to Samsung converter like THIS (not the cheapest shop always, but I’ve bought from them before and the service is excellent)

HTH.
