Potatoe bulkers

What does the work involve? Is it basically collections from farms and deliver to customer? How far would they travel I’ve some Lincolnshire based hauliers in Scotland quite often. Is it very seasonal work or do they stay busy all year round? Sorry for the list of questions cheers!

What does the work involve?
Arrive at farm - drop air suspension unit and trailer ( lets farmer see better ) open top and let them load it .Self weighing is a good idea . 9 times out of 10 you will be delivering to a processor - arrive open top so they can sample - wait for results - discharge into boxes with a box filler or straight onto the production line .You can be tipped as quickly as 20 minutes .

Is it basically collections from farms and deliver to customer? - Yes

How far would they travel ? - I’m based in Northern Ireland . Collected in Ardbroath , Ross on Wye , Ely, March , Chatteris and Redruth all for Ireland (North and South).

Is it very seasonal work? - For us Yes . Busy in winter slack in the spring, summer.

Yup that pretty much sums it up, dads usually steady all week certain times he will be flat out! That’s going from farm straight to customer too

Thanks for your replies that’s a big help

Some get abroad as well, saw 2 Brit spud haulers on the train last night. (granted they were ab texel with Brit traction)

Texel get everywhere, it is surprising where you will come across them. Some tatie bulkers come over unaccompanied from Rotterdam to Hull, pick them up, arrive at factory, sample the spuds, and plug them in, bingo, time to get your breakfast

Mason Bros from Boston go all over the UK on potatoes, they can take the tatey bulker off the chassis of the trailer and it then becomes a skelly. They keep busy all year on alsorts.

free lunch everyday ? carry a deep fat fryer in the cab :stuck_out_tongue:
