Post Office Driving Licence Renewal

Anybody know if you can drive immediatelly after post office driving licence (car) renewal. I mean while waiting for the driving licence card to be returned.

If you mean a photo change then yes

If your next D4 medical is due within the next 5 years then you will find that the LGV expiry date changes to 5 years from the date the new licence is issued if not had one issued since Oct 2012

Do you mean renewing with a new photo?
As long as you have renewed before the expiry date there is no interruption in your validity to drive.

Yes, provided you meet all the criteria under Section 88 Road Traffic Act 1988.
Essentially, you must be confident that there are no medical issues likely to result in refusal to renew, you can only drive vehicles of the class specified in your expired licence (and must comply with any conditions of that licence), your old licence must not have been revoked on medical grounds, and you must not be disqualified by a court. Technically, your application must have been received by DVLA (so you should really leave it a day or two and send your application by trackable post, so you can confirm it has been received).

Same applies to a vocational licence, with the additional requirement that it must not have been suspended by the Traffic Commissioner.

The licence lapsed on Tuesday.
The post office take a photo, check the documents, record a signature and send it all off to DVLA for renewal. No medical issues no change of address etc. It’s just the renewal otherwise all as before.
The question is, when I leave the post office, can I drive immediatelly or will I have to wait for the card to be returned?

You’re currently without a valid driving licence so you cannot legally drive until the application has been processed by DVLA.

Thanks, I just wandered since everthing is recorded and checked off by the post office that it may be okay to drive.

This gets interesting

with an expired photo the licence is not valid so you can get done for driving without a valid licence but you cannot get done for driving not in accordance with the licence because your categories are still legally valid

Its a weird legal situation

Up to £1000 fine but no points for expired photo

points and fine if driving without the relevant category

According to the renewal letter you can drive while waiting for your licence to be returned. (with some conditions which I meet)

One of those conditions (which may or may not be clearly stated in the letter) is that your application must have been received by the Secretary of State (in practical terms, DVLA, who act for him).

As a side note, the trainer on my most recent CPC course was adamant that this only applies to car licences - he claimed that an expired vocational licence was invalid (i.e. you cannot drive a lorry) until the new licence had been issued and received by the driver. Again, I just let it go on the grounds that questioning it would (a) lead to FUD among others on the course and (b) eat into my family time.

Well, it turns out you can drive a car on your ordinary licence immediately after renewing it at the post office. Anyone for a piece of humble pie?
