Post here if you've lost your job because of the shutdown

As refuse workers we have a fairly high chance of catching it, but surely they can’t shut us down, bins still need emptying :unamused:

I think pretty much every type of work is going to be affected to some degree.
The lads in our work in the aviation fuels work have seen their work practically wiped out as planes stop flying.
The rest of our work is starting to thin out, in part due to more people being available to do the regular workload, and also because less people on the roads, going to work, visiting family etc means less need to fill up the petrol stations.
They sent out a letter to all staff today saying they expect it to continue to impact the business, but cant say to what effect. In the short term, we may be forced to take annual leave if there isn’t enough work to keep us all going. If it goes on longer term then they’re saying we might a face the possibility of having to take unpaid leave.

There seems to be a pre-quarantine surge in DIY and home improvement purchases so I’m doing more store work rather than trucking, but I suspect that this is a temporary thing and I suspect that it will die off in 2-4 weeks and that may result in a drop in work for me

Punchy Dan:
I’ve lost 2 loads this week so far …

DipperDave would have managed to do that after Sunday lunch

I supply building sites and I’m expecting work to drop off a cliff sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. Not too bothered about it though as I’m well placed to ride it out with no mortgage or other debts. But I seriously feel for those with young families to support.

Had the dreaded phone call 3 times this week…"there’s no work tomorrow "

Luckily i do general haulage and my second biggest outgoing my IVA finishes this month so I’m £530 better off so even if work tails off I don’t need to find that every month and can concertante on my mortgage which is joint with my brother
I feel sorry for those who’ve lost their jobs [emoji22]

This might actually be a good time to get registered with agencies regardless of your work situation at the moment.
Now that self-isolation is being applied to entire households, and with the inevitable closure of schools/nurseries etc, get ready for short term vacancies as families get put on lock down to care for a kid with the sniffles.
Give it a month, and watch agency wages skyrocket.

If you are wearing your gloves and other PPE then I can’t see why? 80% of us are likely to catch it. You are more likely to catch it in a social environment, doing shopping, or from a colleague who has caught it that way.
I work in trade waste (bins, skips, containers). We have started staggered starts for drivers 15 minutes apart, reduced contact with office staff and improved cleaning of (sometimes shared) wagons at the start and end of shifts( should always be this way IMHO). Weighbridge staff have started methods of reduced contact with drivers.
We still have to get signatures from some customers which is unavoidable at the moment but a quick spray of the hands or a wet wipe isn’t difficult.
Work might start slowing down as businesses scale back, however there will probably be some drivers going off sick or other isolation.
I am on a contract so will get paid, but don’t get full sick pay so hoping I don’t get it. Some of our loaders and drivers are agency so won’t necessarily get anything.

Apparently Universal Credit have relaxed there rules around this it may help with housing cost but not much else

This also includes the self employed

Might be with looking into

I work at Birmingham Airport loading bars, food & duty free onto the planes & was pretty much told last night that if I have another job to go to…Take it!
As I was loading the truck in the early hours of this morning I had to take off 2 RyanAir bars & a Tui bar as both flights had been cancelled.
I only ended up loading a couple of Jet 2 planes & both of those were repatriation flights going out empty of passengers.
I’m luckier than some as I have 2 shifts holiday now to find something else(as long as the company doesn’t fold & can still honour the holiday pay).
I hope that everyone affected can weather the storm!

Same as Bald Bloke, I’m flat out. 13-15hr days, plenty of rest day work and offers of any holiday booked for the rest of this holiday period to april can be cancelled and carried over to next years allocation. Lucky that unless we run out of food I’m gonna be in a job. If we do run out of food then it wont matter anyway. Actually I’ll still be ok, get the shotgun out and have a few bunnies

“Watch agency rates skyrocket”?
Have you been reading Winseer’s posts again?

Some drivers will be off sick or isolated, but many will be under employed and looking for work.
Hours rules relaxed.
Can’t see pay rising for anyone.

Yep.
Qualifying rules relaxed, but service being overwhelmed, and it was always criminally slow. Hopefully some extra effort being put in there.
Mortgage holidays from lenders. Hopefully those private landlords benefiting from those will pass on a rent holiday to needy tenants.
Lots of issues, but lots of possible solutions, too.

My daughter (currently fit and well), who normally sits in an office in front of two computer screens, was told to come to work yesterday and they moved the desks further apart over the weekend. Yesterday, they gave her a laptop and a spare monitor and she is now setting up an office in her front room. She will go to the office one half-day a week to do some manual stuff and to collect the post.

She is not looking forward to it, worrying that after a couple of weeks on her own, she will be stir crazy.

Just heard on Jeremy Vine that mortgage holiday only available to those who have dad mortgage more than a year and paid more than 25% off

Us on the walking floors are anticipating a rush next week as all the dippies chuck out all the fresh produce they’ve bought but don’t know what to do with cos there is no instructions on the packaging

Your dead right get it before it all goes ■■■■ up

Being as touring is pretty much completely cancelled for the forseeable future i have lost some work, which i had been sort of banking on. However, i have been carrying on doing other work, which has been great fun and also been home pretty much every night this year, which makes a difference. I do miss the euro work, otherwise i would not bother going away again

At least Dozy will be home on Friday night… silver linings and all that.
