Hi folks just a wee question, I may have the chance to change jobs from my current place on to a company that manufactures and builds rigid boxes and refrigerated boxes for vehicles ranging from 3.5t - 26t. My job would be delivering them to the customers once they have been built all over Scotland and also down to England. My question I have is would I still have to use my tacho digicard? Or would I have some sort of drivers diary to note my hours? This maybe a simple question but as I don’t know the answer I’m reaching out.
Cheers Paul

These presumably are new vehicles which haven’t been in service or gone through PDI or calibration
Yes they are brand new and not been at the customer yet, they get delivered straight to the company and they build whatever body is needed, curtain side, fridge or box to the specification of the customer, I was thinking that nothing would be calibrated

Check with your employer but these sound like vehicles that would be exempt from EU regulations.
Your op doesn’t really make clear as to whether you’re going to be delivering the boxes on your own companies vehicle, or whether they’ll be brand new vehicles complete with the box to be delivered to the customer. There’s a world of difference regulation wise between the two.

As I used to delivery brand new vehicles to customers on trade plates we still had to use tacho/digit cards and still drive under Eu regs as nearly all was over the domestic 50kms limit

“New or rebuilt vehicles, not yet in service” are exempt from EU regs it seems. Can’t see any distance limits in the exemption for them?

These would be brand new vehicles that come as cab and chassis, this company then builds the rear on their production line, that could be a refrigerated box, dry standard box or a curtainsider. They build custom made from Transit/sprinter size up to 26t Class C Vehicles. I will hopefully be going down to speak to them this week, so I was just looking for a bit of background information.
Cheers for all the replies

I read it as it being a bodybuilder fitting bodies to new unregistered chassis. The days of the traditional coach and body builders have gone due to the EU

Would that be TEKBO …for new vehicle where the tacho isn’t activated ,no card needed ,but i would imagine you would need to keep some sort of record ,And if delivering repaired vehicles then i would imagine you need to use a card

A “professional vehicle delivery company” may well be wise in asking their drivers to use digi cards and to follow EU regs.
Could you please say where in the law it is a requirement though?

A professional delivery company may well do that with finished goods, but this sounds more like a commercial body builder, before Whole Vehicle Type Approval, anyone with a shed could design and build a lorry body, now it’s more like getting planning permission so traditional coachbuilders have died out.
