I suspected correctly.
Turned up at 0600. “We’re not sure what you’re doing yet. Go and have a coffee.”
0720: “You’re definitely doing something today.”
0745: Finally leave the yard in a rigid with 8 pallets of tinned turkey (Best Before Feb 2004
) to go to Newport. Sat Nav works a charm, and gets me to the correct industrial estate, but finding the drop is a little trickier. Asked at an electrical wholesalers, and they weren’t sure, but managed to direct me correctly anyway. 10 minute wait whilst someone else is being tipped, then I’m up.
Back to the yard to pick up 1 pallet of tinned beef and 8 pallets of bottles of wine, both to go to Swindon. Again, Sat Nav works perfectly, except that I miss the entrance to the drop (a brewery), and have to turn round. Still, only a couple of minutes lost.
Final drop of the day - 1 pallet to Iceland’s RDC in Swindon. Booked in for 1600, but turn up at 12:30, since I’m getting close to needing a 45, and there’s nothing else to do that day. Nice polite ■■■■■■■ security tells me that I can come in, but it’ll probably be ages before I tip
“You didn’t want to leave today, did you?”
Stories of RDCs posted here start going through my mind
I park up, go to Goods In (about 15 drivers in there all waiting to be done
) & hand in my paperwork, and 1/2 hr later I’m told to go on a bay
Another 1/2 hr later, and I’m out of Iceland
so it’s just back to Avonmouth and clock off. Get back to Avonmouth 20 minutes after my supposed booking time in Iceland
So, if any of you guys saw a newbie-looking guy driving a plain white 53-plate MAN rigid in Iceland this afternoon, that was me
Oh, and a perfect demonstration of Sod’s Law:
I’ve been free for work for the past 4 weekends, and the agency hasn’t come up with anything. Of course, since I’ve arranged to go to a big party with a load of my friends this weekend, they called up and offered me a class 1 job tomorrow…
Chrisie: I’ll take your drops in Birmingham - I went to Uni there, and I know Small Heath pretty well
