Changes suggested as a result of Glasgow bin truck crash. People conducting vocational licence medicals may have to see past medical records so does this mean charges will increase?
i asked my gp today what he charges for a hgv medical, £135 ( up from £105 3 years ago) was his reply, that covers the medical and admin costs of any information dvla ask for was his reply.
i did the cheap £60 back street medical once and it was more hassle than it was worth, dvla wanted more info and that doctor couldnt give them it so they got in touch with me to get my gp details, instead of a 6 week wait too get licence back it took 8 months. so i know use my gp n pay the big fee as it saves a pile of hassle
Doctors are under no legal or moral obligation to conduct these medicals. And unless they come under the umbrella of an NHS service they never will be.
It is a private service - a doctor can charge whatever they want for it. And we are not even required to have an NHS GP. What about the people who have private general practitioners?
I shall/will not go into it. But the loopholes have not been closed for entry into the armed forces with questionable health. It’s next to impossible to stop those who want to play the game. If you want to disappear medical records it’s far from hard or onerous.
What we really need is a panel of DVLA Doctors and severe penalties for those who are found to have lied to them. And even then it would not be perfect and those with the desire could ‘beat’ the system.
Can only be a step forward.
Isn’t there a scheme to put all medical records on line so they can be accessed by any authorised person?
So if you’re taken ill any Medics can find your history quickly.
Centralised records mean no further admin cost to local GPs, surely?

The paying of GP’s to do this is a scam go in off the dole and say you’ve a bad back and get signed off on the sick and it costs nothing go in requiring a medical to enable you to work and contribute to the shirkers sick pay and you have to pay. At my last medical the surgery refused to take a cheque for £80 but oddly didn’t put up much of a fight when I said “ok cash will be £60” while having the medical the cash was sat on the GP’s desk in a brown envelope with my name on it.
All work related medicals should be free

I agree with you on this point, Why should a HGV Driver or any other drivers that need to have a medical to do their job, For instance do Bank managers have a medical to to their job I dont think so, IMO Its high time this Medical should be free, After all, all working people pay national insurance stamps, Im a long retired haulage man myself, & My last medical in 2014 was £80.00. Im 83 now so god only knows what It would cost me now, Regards Larry.
I recently did my medical with a doctor Singh in Sheffield who charges £35, so no surprise he has em queuing around the block

Frankly ludicrous on many levels.
Using this argument, the nhs should also cover pilots medicals, as they need them for their job. They should cover athletes medicals/drug testing as it’s needed for their job. They should even cover scuba driving instructors/commercial divers medicals as you need them for your job. The list goes on and on.
The nhs is a health service to treat and prevent illness. As part of that they will give a fit note - as it helps the patient who is unwell. They are not there to do work related medicals. And to force them would put a huge strain on the service (hint hgv medicals are quick and simple, pilot ones not so much).
What’s more… the nhs do not even cover the ongoing costs to work for them! The idea they should cover your ongoing work costs is therefore laughable. A doctor has to pay their own professional memberships (which they need to work), and for their ongoing continued professional development (which they need to work). Guys who think they are hard done to having to pay a small amount for a medical or for a days cpc training once a year have no idea.

So it charges a fee to enable people to work yet signs shirkers off for free yep your right that is laughable the sooner the NHS charges a fixed fee to see the doctor as other countries do then the level of shirkers will also drop and the number of missed appointments.
Just to add you say the NHS is there to treat and prevent illness just take a look at some of the services it provides that are neither prevention or cure, IVF, cosmetic plastic surgery and ■■■ changes all cost considerably more than medicals which in themselves can be seen as prevneting illness or alerting the Dr to early signs of ill health, until the people who run the NHS are capable of doing it the NHS will always be underfunded look at the story in todays Times a drug that costs £6 for a 2 month supply in Europe yet the same drug is costing the NHS 5,000% more

not all records are online as some doctors still prefer the old way, i only know this as having a 9 week stay in hospital you could hear nurses complaining about incomplete online records and having to request paper records from the libary
Due to brain fade and bad admin on my behalf I found out my license had lapsed. Needed a medical.my doctor was ten day wait and £140 not including eye test. Went to one of these doctors for drivers places. Think I paid £40. Read off a A4 sheet on the wall. No diabetes test, nothing. I wasn’t in there 15 mins. That has got to be wrong but it got my license back. I then went to my doctor and asked for an mot to make sure no issues.
It should be stopped if we are all honest. If you have a license threatening illness that’s where people will go.

The shortage of lorry drivers could actually come true if they bring this in.
