Port container loading policy?

hi

is there a policy at ports as to what they’ll load a container onto??, will they only drop onto a skelly or can you take a swan neck/low loader trailer/flat bed chucking couple ropes over top of container and tie them to the trailer?

cheers.

Containers are often shifted on flat beds, so can’t see any problem, it’s your problem to ensure it’s secured

Not sure, they may all have their own rules. I’ve only ever used skellys myself. I’ve seen plenty of flat beds, but all have had twist locks fitted. Not sure a couple of ropes will be adequate for a container. Especially the 20 footers which are usually pretty heavy. Used to pull boxes loaded with ceramic tiles at one stage - about 27 tonnes apiece. Ropes= :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

before any one misses the humour and goes off on one, the ropes thing is tongue in cheek  :stuck_out_tongue: , i just wondered if they would only load a skelly as thought i heard on here a driver being refused because it wasnt a skelly. could be wrong.

Done that myself, when Pilkingtons was still going in Agecroft, bloody nightmare of a delivery in the wet, far too much wheel spinning.
I realised later that I was going in the wrong way - I went in up Lumn’s Lane, then right at the top - this is where I had the traction issue, but I should have gone upto Queensway and in Rakes Lane way…

as long as what ever you have ie skelly flatbed semi low or skateboard as long as it has twistlocks they will let you load /unload at the ports they get a bit over excited if you rock up for a box without them :unamused:

They would not load a trailer with out twist lock on the docks, think they would reject you if you had a lock missing as well, and a lot of the container storage yards wont either, unless its just a storage box.
