Poor Radio Reception

Got a new satnav and when I plug it in the radio, in some areas , loses signal. My last satnav was fine.
Volvo FH . Any ideas ?

Sounds like interference running through the wires when the ■■■ lighter is activated. Is the radio close to the plug? Is there another plug to fit the sat nav into?

The plugs are about 6 inches from the radio. I’ve tryed 12 v and 24 v plugs. But no difference

i remember a long long time ago in a far away land, when I had my first mini, the radio used to whine if you didn’t have a suppressor fitted.
you might be able to get something like that nowadays where you would just plug the aeriel cable in one end and then the out cable into the radio, or some filters that you would wire into the radio power supply …
something simple like that could be your answer.

have a look on flea bay but ask an auto electrician before you part with your money…

also do a google search for car radio interference, there are a lot of discussion forums… even some intelligent answers… good luck.

You can get clip on ferrites from Maplins for around 50p each

Wow. As a radio ham I’m impressed. Not one wrong suggestion out of all of that lot, better than some full licensed hams I know.

Just another question, the areas it loses signal if you unplug the Satnav from the radio do you then get the signal back? Its just to confirm it is actually the Satnav causing the issue and it isn’t just a completely coincidentally timed problem with the radio aerial.

Hi Conor,
Yea the radio comes back to life when I unplug satnav.

I was going to buy a clip on Ferrite , as Peirre suggests, but not quite sure where to put it…

Start with the cable from the Satnav to the radio. If you can get two or more turns of the cable through it the better as that increases the choking effect of the ferrite.

If that makes no difference the next one is going to be hard because its going to be on the radio antenna cable.

End of the day though is if its some cheap Yingtong job it may have an inverter that is generating so much RF interference there’s nothing you can do other than either accept you’re going to have to unplug it for time to time or bin it and buy a better one.

A lot of stuff uses 5v USB so it will now generally have some sort of buck converter to drop 12-24v to 5v. Personally I doubt there will be any solution other than unplugging it. You may find using one of those portable rechargeable USB battery packs is an improvement ideally where it is actually configured as a 5v external battery pack rather than a 12v jumpstart with a USB socket which will again have a buck converter in it.

ive found the same problem it can be as easy as not using a cheap usb plug using the o/e usb plug should help
i do prefer to use a double usb plug but somtimes this causes poor radio reception so have to go back to original

I had a similar problem with a dash cam, when plugged in it would interfere with the radio, I had another cable (cigarette lighter to usb) from a redundant satnav, that cable works beautifully with no detrimental affect on the radio.

If it is a 5v usb, then maybe you could buy a better transformer/cable somewhere, but where I have no idea because the all claim not to interfere with radio reception but many do, especially the cheap ones.

good luck

Thanks for all the advice, I am going to try a ferrite from Maplins, I’ve also got the old usb lead from my old satnav, which worked fine on the old one, I will try that aswell. Will let you know how I get on in case someone else has the same problem in the future… Thanks again [THUMBS UP SIGN]
