POLL - red light camera and emergency services

A colleague received a fixed penalty after moving to a bus lane to allow a police car with “blues & twos” to pass! but until the muppet CCTV controllers are able to show common sense & discretion no proffesional driver should risk a fine or points, but again it’s not about common sense & discretion but driven by greed for revenue :imp:

this is just a moral versus legal debate which are 2 things that can easily conflict due to politicians having been drastically separated from reality

legally you are not allowed to break the law by running the red light and you are not required to move for blue lights and sirens

morally that emergency vehicle is likely to be on their way to an emergency (i wont say save a life as there is no such thing) so perhaps you should try and make it easier for them

i intend to retain a clean licence so i wouldnt break the law

If an ambulance turns up to a heart attack victim and de-fibs them is that not ‘saving a life’?

no its not. we all have to go one day and indeed will go so it is merely prolonging the inevitable. saving a life is a political term to make it sound a little less morbid but it is still not going to prevent death occurring in the long run whether its 30 days, 30 months or 30 years down the line

If that’s the case then why do we have emergency services and hospitals that cost the tax payer millions of pounds?

Easy for MPs to sort it - simply add an exemption in the RTA and HC which allows a driver to SAFELY cross the stop line using as little forward room as possible when B&Ts are behind

because it is morally correct to look after the welfare of citizens both for the afflicted and those who care about them

however, from a purely objective perspective, my point remains the same

Maybe they’d be better off showing emergency drivers those two videos of how to get on with the job the old school way.In which case they won’t need to worry too much about cars needing to cross any red lights to get out of the way anyway.I don’t think there’s any such thing as a ‘safe’ blue light run if it’s being done properly and it’s that aversion to risk by all concerned which is the real problem.

i quite agree with you Rog but there is little point in the inclusion of shoulds, coulds and woulds when the poll is based on what is the case under the current circumstances and we are no more than cashpoints for every authority who has the power to extract money from motorists so why take a risk when you are well aware that there is a camera there which will prove that you broke the law regardless of your honourable reasons for doing so? discretion is down to the mood of the person who is making the decision there and then and no reasonable arguement is going to sway them if they feel like being a swine

Now that everyone has said their bit I can confirm that the cameras do not activate unless the loops are triggered at speed.Rolling the car over the stop line slightly to let a vehicle through will not set them off.

But 55 foot is taking the schmeichel! :open_mouth: hang on plod :unamused: I’m in first on tickover  how long can you wait? :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

At what speed would they set off and what if the car had to totally get out of the way and the whole vehicle was to go beyond the stop line. I know I once set one off when I was making a very slow and awkward turn and they’d gone red while my trailer was still passing. I never heared anything but that could solely have been down to the fact that I never used to put a number plate on the rear of my trailer when pulling a Dutch, German or Swedish ferry trailer.

In my case, the ambulance set off the camera which also showed me going through red light!
