Poll for sat nav

MrFlibble:
I’m considering trying to write a computer virus that tells people to jump off the nearest cliff. Perhaps then these people will be removed from the gene pool, and the average intelligence of the human race will rise a bit…

if you can infect the satnavs, you can do your bit to ease congestion too

yes vote
used a Tomtom 910 in Italy last 3 weeks (did a change over) and it was FANTASTIC some of the roads i needed to find were on its maps but not on the laptop i also use (autoroute 2005) ,so if used wisely in lew with a good map and reading the road signs for weight limits etc its get my vote

this is what happens when you don’t engage common sense. half an hour up the road from me

I voted ‘No’.

I have TomTom on my PDA, and Autoroute 2007 (with GPS locator) on my laptop. But I still prefer maps.

I am home most nights and always look up the postcodes of any unfamiliar drops I have the next day on Multi Map.

I find that a print out from Multi Map and one of my Phillips county maps get me where I need to be just fine.

I’m not anti-satnav as such. It’s just that I like to see where I’m going on a paper map.

When I was at Somerfield we used to have vehicles broken into and satnavs stolen on a daily basis in London. Think that is probably the biggest reason I don’t bother using it every day.

never used sat nav, i know where the majority of our drops are so dont even bother with a map. i do have a box of a to z’s stashed away in the kitchen cupboard.

i get to know where im going the day before so anything new comes along and ican have a quick flick through a book or grab one of our drivers that may have done it

A quick look at a map shows that there is a road running parallel to the railway line just on the northern side of the line. My guess is that it actually told her to turn down that road (possibly due to a slight positioning error down to poor satellite signal), and she went down the railway line instead.

Prime candidate for my virus, methinks

i think the sooner you sort that virus out the better mr fibble. they shouldn’t be driving if they can mistake a railway track for a road :unamused:

Never used a sat nav just stick with my maps

Used to have a Garmin wich I used as an aid but dont have 1 now

muckles:
The problem with Sat Nav is the user, it’s an aid to navigation not a subsitute for engaging your brain.

that would make a great sig

I don’t use sat nav because 90 % of the time I’m going to places I been before and the other 10% I’m either stood talking to the customer in a market or I have their phone number to ring for directions - and if its tricky to find they often meet me somewhere easy and I follow them for the last few miles :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Of course this may be cos my work is a little specialised!! if I was on general haulage I would consider using one

tom tom go
bought the week they launched it
a major contribution to road saftey is what i posted on here i still think that
as others have said its no good if you cant read a map

For the type of agency work I get, one or two days with companies who don’t generally know where your going when you phone them the night before the job, sat nav is brill. I still carry all my maps but have hardly had to use them since I got my Tomtom Rider. No more looking for places to pull in to check the map. Only been down one dodgy road since I got it 6 months ago. Money well spent.
Mind you I’m a newbie, so not steeped in the maps tradition.

I’m an oldie, steeped in the maps tradition   .

I use Autoroute 2006 on my laptop (maps are updated from 2005) with a GPS receiver. I’ve also installed AR Keys from GPS Passion, it makes life a lot easier.

2006 is a considerable improvement on 2005, well worth the update. From reading the GPS Passion site, 2007 is another big step up.

AR 2006 is a complete load of rubbish ( well my version is anyway) the postcode database is broken, puts my house 8 miles from its actual location and similar with other postcodes!!! :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp:
Also I don’t really like the sliders for setting average speeds !!

I’m using AR2003 again, but it’s getting a bit out of date :unamused: however I shall need lots of convincing to buy more Micro$haft crap :imp: :imp: :imp:

I have a garmin handheld sat nav I got for travelling, and plugged it into my laptop for use with infomap navigator. It’s nice to have the map showing on a 13" screen.
Had an issue with it in Cornwall though. It told me to turn right into a lane, which I followed, (most roads in Cornwall are lanes) but this one was tight. 2 houses at the bottom of a valley opposite each other and I just squeaked through. Got to the top of the hill and reached the junction and found that I could see where the original road would have come out, just a couple of hundred yards down the road to my left ! It didn’t even work out quicker :unamused:
I have a stack of phillips county maps which have never done me wrong so far, except they would be better with bridge heights on. I always plan the route before I set off anyway, and have the page with the delivery road showing when I get near the drop. Easy to sneak a peek at the lights and see which is the next turn off I need.

You best get used to finding your way around the UK without sat nav. try using a map, You’ll be amazed how easy it is if you get into it.

The reason for getting to be able to do it the old fashioned way is that sat navs are useful tools when you know roughly where you are going anyway.

It’s like maths, calculators are brilliant tools but you need to know how to get to the answer without a calculator before you can use a calculator to get there quicker.

Mine seems to work fine, though I don’t need it for UK addresses.

I just use mine now as a national a-z which is much lighter and cheaper than the paper alternative. Not used it as a proper GPS for about 3 months !!!

some do , some don’t :imp: :imp: :imp: all you get from MS is wait for next years update or raise the issue with support ( which will cost forty something quid)

have mine on fulltime (tomtom 700) find it very handy not just for directions but if you set a limited speed of 55mph i find the journey times are spot on which comes in usefull when planning out the day , plus the speed camera warnings etc.
all the horror stories you hear about wagon drivers getting stuck or what ever are purely because they’re not using it to it’s full potential, all i do is when i get into a town or village, is use the browse map option and you’ve got a moving a-z and obviously stick to the main roads plus theres now quite a few free download sites for bridge heights, ind estates etc
saying all that i’ve tried one or two cheaper options which were next to useless not recognissing half the addresses or postcodes i entered and trying to send you on some crazy routes, so maybe a case of, you pays your money and takes your choice.
