Are the police listening in when your on the CB?, did they in the old days?, or is it an old wifes tale like the traffic cars being all souped up?.
Police don’t listen to CB radios and all police cars are just basic normal cars that you would buy from the street.
They used to in the old days when it was illegal, they used to pretend to be normal people and try to get you to meet up for an “eyeball” so they could confiscate your rig.
Is it true that it is legal to use a CB radio while driving because a police officer has to be able to answer his own radio while driving?.

yes and a phone if its built in with a corded handset, but then you could be charged with driving without due care etc.
i stand to be corrected but its what a traffic cop told me.

a traffic car in birmingham m6 had one fitted cos i tweaked it for him. his handle was deputy dawwg
My cousin got done for using a CB whilst driving, fined £30 and 3 points. You are only legal using one when mobile on a hands free system, same law as a mobile phone. As Harry says they did listen in when we used the AM sets, and worked with the DTI to nab you.

Correct on the radio, but not 100% on the corded phone bit.

Years ago when we were on the A.M frequencies I got pulled just north of Wetherby.
I had just warned south bounders of a jam sandwich heading their way when the CB crackled into life. I had a load of timber on at the time, and this voice says “ 1-9 for that lorry with the load of wood on”
Because of the way he said it and the fact that nobody I knew called a load of timber a load of wood, in CB talk, I immediately became suspicious. More so when he slowed down to let me pass him.
There’s me franticly trying to get the CB out when he comes flashing past and then pulls me into a lay by.
I’m thinking “that’s it my CBs gone and plus a fine”
Well in all my 45 years of driving I finally found a couple of good coppers.
They came running up to the cab (F89) before I could pull the CB, and they were having a good laugh, one of them jumped in the cab and informed me that they’d had a bad day and my little escapade had made their day much better.
With that they told me to go forth and multiply, but don’t get on that CB until you leave the county

Mobile phone law is for handheld devices that send and receive between certain frequencies (mobile telephone frequencies) and/or those that can send or receive data via the internet. If you have your sat-nav in your hand and programme it, or you use your phone as a sat nav and it’s in your hand, you are guilty of the offence.
If the device is in a fixed cradle when you use it, you are not commiting an offence.
Due to the bandwidths laid down in the law, CB radios, 2-way radios and police radios are not covered by the legislation.

we use 2 way radio’s for jobs, was informed that plod will turn a blind eye to the time a good hands free system comes in use.
if you really want to split hairs, ( i have very little to split),if you are suppossed to keep both hands on the wheel when driving, this would make having a manual gearbox illegal, because you need to remove one hand to change gears.?
I don’t know if they still have them in some of the patrol cars, when I used to run nights back in th early 80s we used to have a great crack with one or two on the M5 from J14 up to gate 9 & the M6 from Corley up to about gate 10. They may have been in other areas but I only ever met those in that patch & they were sound.

Nope, don’t happen no more with CBs in police vehicles.
Suffolk police definately used them in the 80s. We used to do a lot of abnormal stuff mainly to and from ships in the Shell Base in Lowestoft and were escorted by traffic cars which at the time were based in Halesworth. I was probably on FM by then but got a surprise when one started talking to me as we parted company on reaching Shell. I would never have believed it otherwise. Regards, Haddy.

Strathclyde Police have awesome cars. 530d, 525d, 330d &X5 3.0d’s for traffic duties. They look well hot. Also have the odd Volvo V70 and some others.
Never heard coppers on cbs but I always hear 2 old ■■■■■ in the Fairford area on 34 going on about what’s in their shed or how many bunions they have. I don’t think they like it when we’re around Kempford pit interrupting their conversations

Of course they’ll turn a blind eye, as stated in my earlier post, there is no offence for using a CB or 2-way radio.
