on the M1 s/bound Notts area today.2 nearside lanes flashing up the red X and 40mph speed limit…so everybody moves into the 2 outside lanes.the ‘incident’,was a naff looking blue convertible car, surrounded by the Old Bill.as soon as everybody gets by this,we all get over into the nearside lanes,as the road ahead is completely clear…except i spotted in the distance the 2 n/s lanes still flashing up 40 mph and the red’X’ obviously i immediately returned to lane 3,and 40mph…but i was astounded the number of trucks and cars that came hammering past me in the forbidden lanes! i presume they’ll all be getting letters in the post?
Some think the rules don’t apply to them. They deem it to be safe so they go. Or of course you will get the sheep with tunnel vision who copy everone else thinking it’s ok.
Hope they all get done!
The scenario suggests that the warnings are either too far apart providing enough uncovered distance for an unsigned incident or no all clear at the point it should be shown.Or inaccurate in failing to show an all clear in time.Or a deliberate revenue raising scam.
Nissan sport car tried to doa runner.
Weaving across all 4 lanes trying to get away.
Blew the engine in the process spraying oil all over the carriageway then set on fire.
Driver and passenger caught and arrested and driver was already disqualified and no insurance.
Saw it on a facecarp.

Now I have come to realise some of your comments are not the most well thought out but I can assure you the warnings are never too far apart. These type of situations are designed for even the dopiest of drivers and any driver that misses the warnings are speeding travelling too close to the vehicle in front, distracted by something or just not paying attention.
Stick to the rules and you will not have money extracted. Simple really.
Personally I find it quite straightforward, Follow instructions from signs/gantries and maintain restriction until new instruction or “END” signal even if it is 500yds or many miles.

Assuming that the signs seen ‘‘in the distance’’ ‘after’ the obstruction were related to the incident in question how so ?.IE stay out in lane 3 doing 40 mph max for what and why at that point and why so far away to get an update on information that should be made available on a more reasonably continous basis ?.It’s a bit like the omission of speed limit repeaters where needed in numerous places.

Are you sure , I’m assuming your on about that baby blue 350/ 370 z Nissan , I can’t remember seeing red x after car , 99% were in correct ( 2 outside lanes ) before incident so I’d be amazed if there were red x after incident if they’d all flood across & ignore them when 99 % had taken note before incident

If only all drivers could do this! [emoji23]

yes…there was actually TWO sets of red X’s over the 2 inside lanes after the incident.as i went by,there was 2 (i presume) police officers in the blue car, which was about to be towed…

How far apart were the warnings ‘before’ and ‘after’ the incident position.Would it be fair to say that the distance was sufficient to cause the confusion in traffic returning to lane 1/2.Without sufficient repeat warning signs that it should stay out ?.

not sure distance wise, but the next gantry after the incident was well out of view, over a brow and round a curve iirc.

It was all so much easier in those long ago days ( nights ) on the M1 in the 1980’s when eyeballs and headlights and survival instincts and maybe a few primitive speed signs in the central reservation, worked just fine in avoiding conflict with incidents and stopped traffic and at higher speeds.

loved my 2 years on nights,‘trundling’ up and down the M1 between Kilworth and Dewsbury and/or Feltham at a steady 75 mph

And having to watch out for Independent Express and ANC in the mirrors.Honest ociffer we never run over 65 mph. What’s a Red X sign and doing 40 mph when there’s nothing there they’re avin a larf.
