The new police commisioners have been sworn in.
I’m not fully aware of how much power they’ll have, But i couldn’t believe what i’ve just read in the local rag.
Ours turns out to be my cousin. & he looks like me.
one of ours on the other side of the fence.
Do you think they could do anything for us?
less speed cameras.
more patrols at night, so we can be safe when parked up?
long sentences for diesel thieves?
Round here in West Yorkshire there were three politicians up for election for this post.
I have never heard of any of them and have seen no publicity regarding thier intentions.
Complete waste of money I think, they should all follow Doorman Jettison’s example after the Hillsborough fiasco and resign. HTH.
Probably people who are full of their own self importance and ego, hopefully no lorry haters unlike other commisioners
The one round here has a big red phone, with a direct line to the Bat Cave

Exactly the same experience here, no idea who the candidates were let alone who or what they were representing, no leaflets, no local consultancy, no idea, same experience with all the people I have spoken with locally about it !!!
Wife and myself did not vote for the above reasons, a complete shambolic waste of money and time.
they think that the 15% turnout was because the government cocked up with having the elections in november.
the truth i think is, no sod gives a [zb] about this waste of money.
so up to now, none of us know what they’ll do, what they can do.
will they be lorry haters?
it would be nice to have someone on our side, on the other side of the fence for a change.
Of the 4 candidates in my area only one bothered to put a leaflet through the door, and he was the one who got elected. Retired copper, independent, and he was saying all the right things about more bobbys on the beat and a crackdown on anti social behaviour.
So we shall see. He didn’t mention anything on truck crime.
I might email him and ask
I did a postal vote for this.
Ann Barnes (Independent) won it in Kent, which suits me fine although I voted for one of the other independents. I just wanted no one from one of the main 3 parties getting it!
The problem now is, if this candidate now cannot actually do anything because “times are 'ard” when it comes to getting some budget money for some proper policing, then the whole thing becomes a sham doesn’t it?
The best way for better policing and solving the shortage of budget at the same time is to render well-heeled criminals or big shot lawbreakers “criminally bankrupt” at the time of imprisonment. That way, everyone around them falls with them, many of them criminals in their own right. Beyond that, we don’t really have any sympathy for the plight of the thus disenfranchised criminal’s families do we?
UKIP need to win 30ish seats in 2015 to turn this country around. They’ll be the coalition partners in the next hung parliament which would automatically be the case that allows them to win 30+ seats in the first place. Last time around however, they won none. They won’t be forming a coalition with the Tories if Cameron and Osbourne are still at home either. They might even push for Dave rather than Ed should they join Labour as a “coalition of losers” as well. (Eg. Con: 306 seats Lab 300 seats UKIP 30 seats Others: the rest, libdem nearly wiped out) UKIP really would have the balance of power to swing either way - according to which main party signs the “withdrawal commitment” or “referendum commitment” with them first!
I note that the Tories have already rather complacently called Corby as going back to them in 2015!
The “Protest vote” won’t hold beyond the next election apparently.
It doesn’t matter if they are only a “one issue party” since if that one issue is giving us a referendum - let alone just going ahead and pulling us out of Europe - will mean so much money gets saved, that the cuts to the economy (yes, economy rather than public services) can finally come to an end.
We could have in the most perfect Police force in the world with 100% crime detection rate but its still no good when the sentencing or ‘‘justice’’ is as limp wristed as it currently is…
A total and utter waste of a 100 million smackers imo

Mark Burns-Williamson is the newly elected PCC for West Yorkshire. He has been a councillor in Castleford for many years - don’t get your hopes up too high.

I did the postal vote thing, cool idea. In the long run i think it is a good idea but will be a few years befor any impact will be seen.
If the current economic climate teaches us any thing it should be that we become more politicaly aware and active.
The biggest problem they all have now is that they have less than 3 months to set next years budget, it will take that long to see where the money is being wasted or abused
Just another tier of gravy train. 70 grand a year, part time. Cushty. At least Lard Prescott never got in. That really would have been a tragedy.
Just heard on the radio that there will be enquiry into why there was only 20% of the country interested in the vote. I must admit i didn’t vote as i didn’t know who or what they are supposed to do
Neither did I, but I still voted because the ballot paper at least made it clear which candidates were NOT the main three parties.
Of the remainder, I just drew one out of a hat!

If it were a trade union strike ballot the Government would say they don’t have a mandate for action. Funny how these figures are enough for a police commisioner to do his job.
