Good evening so I go into a place daily and often get the whole you should come and work on here ect ect you can do the job not the easiest picking up scrap cars/vans I’m currently working for the subcontractor, the thing is the kit is very tired but they don’t want to spend any money on it only the bare minimum tyres ect,the place I go into have just took delivery of 10 brand new trucks at the minute my truck is working good but when the bad weather comes it will start playing up with lights and god knows what,so the question is has anyone ever made the move to the dark side?was it better?was it as promised?or is it just like everywhere else all lies?
Think frying pan and fire, is the grass greener, it’s all about does the offer tick your boxes, i.e money and conditions.
Why “the dark side”?
Or am I being as obtuse as ever?

Well for a start any friendship or relationship you have with your boss of the subbie outfit will be wiped out if you jump ship and go work for them direct as obviously they’ll no longer need the subbie, so think on.
Furthermore, these companies that use a lot of subbies and temps on a daily basis do so for a good reason, and that is usually because their pay and conditions are crap resulting in them not being able to get or keep drivers.
If you’re on a good enough screw right now then stick with it. The grass is rarely greener.
Why don’t you speak to the drivers at this firm they can tell you all about it,then make a decision, speak to more than one though .
They’ll tell you anything to sell you the job, so ask for confirmation in writing of the terms and conditions, ‘‘the lads earn about £XXXX’’ means bugger all unless you know how many hours and days they’re doing for that pay.
Its the basic that counts, ie the very minimum you can earn.
You might be better off jumping ship, you might not be.
Are the lads there happy most of the time you see them, asking other drivers you have to judge the driver telling you, i’ve known blokes with some of the best jobs going haven’t got a good word for the place and others in not so well paid jobs happy as pigs in muck.
Not really the same situation but a years ago I was working for a chap with 3 wagons and we was subbys for a large company… anyway the job went a bit wrong and someone had to go (last in first out)
I knew it was coming but stayed because I liked the job, I ended up driving for a few people I know covering holidays etc, and then this large company called me saying will you come work for us… worst mistake I ever made!
Then it got tricky with my original boss as he wanted me back, and I wanted to go back to been one of his… but you cannot leave a company to go work for the subby!
Anyway I left the large company and just went and did something else… till April when I went back to where it all started ![]()
Thanks for the replys as for the drivers there some have been there 15 years plus this is the bit that has got me thinking, the subbie will still have work as it won’t dry up its not a bloke with a couple of trucks it’s a massive company, the grass isn’t always greener will be going in to see them today instead of listing to the Chinese wispas
To add to Rob K, are the company drivers happy with their lot or complaining that the subbies get all the longer jobs and overtime, they might be on Tesco wages but only getting 37 hours

Yep. Place where I worked was using a bunch of subbies for a while who were on a day rate so the t/o were running them ragged as you would expect, but their full-timers and trampers were endlessly whining about only getting 40 hours a week and no nights out because of it.

I’d have said that is where you already are given how your company runs its trucks.

Standard practice at many companies. Certainly ones I’ve driven for anyway.

I have, one of the biggest scrap recycling companies with 3 letters to its name, will nick a driver off a subbie but when the boot is on the other foot threatens the subbie with the no more work for you!

Makes sense I suppose. Kind of like when agency drivers go full time and there’s a minimum term or £££.

I’ve learnt the hard way you are never really friends with the boss and it’s naive to think you can be.
I think I mayknow the instance you are refering to, boss …
