Playing the game

Just talking to a mate of mine who is being shafted by the company who he is subby for. told him to play them at there own game hit traffic extra hour when tipped break times at peak delivery points there was countless ways to shaft a company that keeps shafting you was i on my own when behind the wheel or does anyone else use the clock to hit back at employers

and after a while he wont be a subbie for them, result.

Yeah I agree, guaranteed way to make sure they’re not going to bother with your services any more. No employment rights so they can just pick up the phone when he is at the other end of the country and tell him his services are no longer required on the spot if they want to be really funny about it leaving him having to take all his gear out and figure out how to get home as he won’t be insured to drive the truck.

And he isn’t getting back at an employer because he is a subby and not an employee. He is getting back at a customer and that doesn’t often work out well for your business when the word gets about.

Is he an owner operator with his own truck, or a pseudo tax dodging agency driver ■■

I play the game so it works for me. Both ways.

I know when the traffic is going to be shocking. And if I want a long day I aim for it. I know that microlise only tells them I’m still at a drop - not what I’m doing… And I know how to use my unpaid break to my advantage.

However, mostly I just wanna get home. I’d much rather do a 5 hour shift and be paid for 8 then drag out a 9 hour shift to 15.

If I do a short run and then they hang me around doing nothing right up to the 8.45 (45 unpaid break) - then I’m going to point out that I need to now take my 45 min break. And I need to fill up the truck with diesel - so it will turn into a 10 hour day atleast. Some companies bring it on themselves.

An O/D wants to be fttm getting the job done and saving time working the tacho to his/her advantage. One that hangs the job out is doing no one harm but himself. They’ll be plenty of others willing to take his place once hes been kicked out on his ear. Even if agency, same goes, if theres one that gets the job done in half the time who’s the employer keeping on…certainly not one trying to throw a spanner in the works at every opportunity…

Is your mate working for British Rail in 1985?

Years ago working on the papers, used to collect from the Yorkshire post every night.
About twice a week, when the printers fancied overtime, they would literally throw a spanner in the works and shut down for a couple of hours, all planned in advance. They were very proud of these shenanigans, but it wasn’t so popular with us drivers who were job and knock.
Of course the site has now been levelled and will no doubt be turned into flats, while the paper is printed by robots elsewhere
