Planning the route

Trying to get my head around the best way to do this, obviously sat navs play a part in this nowadays but just looking at my road atlas what would be the quickest and most effective way to plan out route including breaks etc?

Regards

Depending on your vehicle - stick mainly to main roads and only use your satnav for the last mile or so to the delivery.
You shouldn’t need to worry too much about planning a break but when you hot 4 hours driving start to look for somewhere suitable to stop. It has never hurt anyone to stop earlier than they have to.

In terms of actually planning the route out where and how is this typically done I.e. driver arrives at the transport office and gets given route or?

I use normal sat nav and if sat nav says to turn left but there is a sign saying weight restriction or low bridge I won’t get under I drive past the turn and the sat nav will recalculate the route. I do this till I find a turning I can go down

I always look at the motorways first, then A roads, then alternatives in case I get diverted or miss a turn. I have sat nav but have hardly used it so far. I also have a book of basic hand-drawn maps of regular depots from the nearest M-way junction - massive help!
I tend to take a 15 min break after 2-2.5 hours so I only have to do 30 later if necessary. I make a note of how long the drive is to each destination, what time I took my breaks, and any time banked. Partly to help me out getting to know my regular trips, partly cos my memory is verging on ‘alzheimer’!
