Hiya… they had a depot in Rushton Spencer it was called the Robin Hood (cafe), They seemed to spend hours there but i think they was waiting
to collect in Leek and useing time up…who bought them out ■■?. They always run 4 wheeler Seddons and a Dodge K series with a v6 two stroke engine
it made hell of a racket.
John
I remember Placketts.
They were Yellow with Purple sign writing of I recall correctly.
Parcel delivery firm - competition for Carswells from Boseley !!
(They later became UPS, Carswells that is when they were bought out).

Yes I remember Placketts. We had a convoy of C&D lorries following each other around Lincoln and we all knew each other.
There was also Rainbow, Wilkinson Transport, United Carriers (me) Roadline and National Carriers and then those antipodean upstarts, TNT tried to muscle in on our patch.
I remember back about 1978 getting some brochures from Seddon Atkinson and the cover of the SA200 series brochure was of a Placketts 4 wheel box van. If I can find it, will scan and post.

Hi all,I had the same situation in Manchester in the 60s & 70s. there was us(Ripponden & District),Bridges of Preston,Coopers of N.Wales,Plackets,Carswells,Tuffnells Sheffield,Wilkinsons Rochdale and a few others.Like you we all knew each other.Lots of textiles and piece goods coming out of Manchester at that time.It wasnt unknown if a few of us were together for one of the textile merchants to say “any of you lads passing through Oldham who wants to drop a parcel off for 5 bob”.Happy Days

Their depot used to be alongside the A52 near Sandiacre, I remember both the green and yellow liveries and the Seddon luton bodied vans with the Perkins 6354 engine.
Pete.
Funny that! Plackets spent that much time at Robin Hood cafe (Geoff,s) , when they disappeared off the scene the cafe shut .
One of the few cafes where bacon cheese n tomatoes (came on a tin plate sizzleing) with 2 toast a mug a tea, and the cost , a couple a good white empty pallets. Those WERE the days my friend we thought they`d never end…

Oh I remember that one, an office supply company from Lincoln who I collected from every day asked me to deliver half a dozen office chairs on the way home. I agreed and was laughing to myself about the wad of money he had given me, until I drove into this customer in Goole only to meet my depot manager coming out of the office
The next morning he asked where I was going and I had to tell him. He asked me for half the money and then laughed. Don’t let me catch you again was all he said. Later I found out he was one of the biggest fiddlers on the firm when he was still on the road
Hi John
You’re right.
Must be the heat that has mushed the old grey matter.
A good friend of mine worked at Carswells for a number of years - Kevin Wilson - doing North Wales and Chester runs
before he got his class one and ended up at Allmans.
Think he drives for Morrisons now.
Carlisle’s were down an old farm track just before the little bridge that crossed the Dane.
A lot of ERF’s in White with Blue sign writing pulling tippers !!
Bet you even remember Bob Manleys cafe on the A34 at Talke !!

hi,
i remember seeing a convoy of plackets lorrys every night heading north on the m1 coming from london, this would be in the late seventys, they were seddons, if i remember correctly, they were often towing one another, so presumebly they carried their own tow bars. they also had a dept on the a45 at irthlingborough, which is now the freightroute company dept on the a45/a6 roundabout.
cheers diesel
i seem to recall that they ran in convoy down to london on night trunk and one of the trucks was driven by one of their fitters in case of breakdowns, this could explain seeing them being towed
plackets had a depot at sandiacre at notts, next to the united biscuits depot, last time i was a round that way they had alot of 13t renault rigids,i think boots took over the depot for storage when they finished.

Ho John
Origianally I was from Congleton. Used to go to school in Sandbach though.
I can remember all the trucks that used to park up on the Car Park in Sandbach.
Bet you may know my dad - Arthur Sproston - worked for Carmans/BET - until he died in 1994.
He used to do Tankers - sugar from France, fridges all over the place. He was at Carmans from the year I was born - 1965 - and began doing
the milk runs collecting churns and taking them into Manchester. Used to go with him and my uncle - David Sproston (who is at BIS/HMC/WBB quarry) - and I
can remember the real custard and bacon sarnies they did in the canteen on a Saturday !!.
Always wanted to my class 1 but my eye sight was too bad to pass the test.
Now I am living in South Africa for the last 10 years - beautiful country !!
