Ah, those little Izuzâs with sleeper boxes. My first tramping job was in one of those. All over the UK, night heater didnât work, tacho was all screwy and the roofbox leaked. Still, it went like stink, shame it didnât have CC on it.Last place I was at were going to replace the MAN fleet with those. Had a couple on demo. Every single lad that drove one only did so once, became âde rigeurâ to offer to burn your digicard when you went to the office to hand in your timesheet.
Think we were offered them on a 3 or 6 month trial. Once a few lads had had a go, TM rang Beechâs up and told them to come get them off the yard, as they were in the way.
I had to drive a Canter 7.5T from Aldershot to Holsworthy (Devon) and back yesterday. I normally donât accept 7.5T work anymore but this is a firm I work for a lot, it was a nice long drive with only two drops (the first being at Chard, Somerset) and the pay rate is slightly less than for class 2. The truck was still a heap of junk, though. Flimsy as ever, gearbox that went down into 4th while I was accelerating away (had to switch to manual, which I never do on other automatics) and when you turned the indicator on, you could easily turn the headlights off. And it didnât even have a radio!
The normal excuse is that the tin-foil cab means payload is increased, but this load was just flat packed cardboard boxes. Most of their newer trucks are Mercs (the old ones are Iveco, neither my favourite make but at least theyâre sturdy) - the newer ones are a big improvement on the old ones, but why on earth Mercedes would sell these through their dealerships I donât know.
This is what I was driving today. Just a Stralis, nothing exciting, but a lot nicer than the Japanese junk pile I had to take to Devon yesterday.

Looks better than it drives, although pretty comfortable

Haha, does it have more elbow & leg room compared to the axor? Is it quieter?

Surely you could have got another inch or two further back Toddy!

Much better than the Axor - but the gearbox is no better than the Stralis

Plenty have tried - the armco looks like a wriggly worm -
driving this at the moment:
Hi mate! Were is that pic taken,Smedjebacken?loading steel to norsk stÄl as?How do you like the new Volvo?
Hi Dan, itâs SSAB (formerly Ruukki) in HĂ€meenlinna. Or maybe I shouldnât say that, because of the trouble I got into for taking a photo inside their top-secret warehouse
anyways the Volvo is nice, but it wonât lift the tag and they canât do anything about it in Volvo Estonia. the driverâs window doesnât want to close either but as a non-smoker that doesnât bother me too much. Electrical quirks from this one and the rest of its kind (15 FH4 Volvos or so) unfortunately made sure that from now on Scania is what gets ordered

So sad! I feel your pain. How much load can you take from the tag axle? 2-3 tons, or everything except raising the tag?
