Hi Suedehead. Could not say for sure -probably unlikely the Neville cabs were common to Ameys in the 60s as are a number of ex BRS in the background the Ford 10 van though says early 60s .I was transferred from haulage to another Company within the group 1959 and and lost touch so to speak .late 60s Consolated Goldfields bought out Ameys plc later to sell to Hanson who Owned Greenwoods Transport and ran for a while together .thats about all i know apart from the numerous sell offs (asset stripping)there were depots at London,Frome,Cheltenham. how it all finished up -well it was Hansons --say no more.—toshboy

Well spotted

VTD 495M was one of a pair of Atkinson ‘Searcher’ rigids that John bought from Chapman & Co. of Balham & Darwen (later Chapman Inveresk and then Chapman Envelopes) - the other was STC 262M.

Each had started life as a rigid flat with a 6LX engine (150 bhp), 6-speed David Brown and double-drive bogie. John shortened them into 6x4 tractors with 8LXB engines and Fuller gearboxes.

VTD was his first 38 tonne Atki, and progressed through having a standard day cab and then an ex-Riding sleeper, before becoming the first of what he called his ‘Mk.3’ Atkinsons, which involved fitting a second-hand cab from a scrapped 400 Series.

Thanks for the info very interesting

Simpsons had Leylands when they first started years ago, they also had Seddons & Commers I can also remember them having a milk tanker a Guy I think, they are very long established Haulage firm, I new old George Simpson he used to go to the RHA Meetings now & again, an old work pal of mine from Smilers Maurice Taylor used to drive one of the Seddons for them. ; Also Ken McColm worked there some years ago, those good old days Eh, Regards Larry.

i used to have a pint with Maurice in the club at Prudhoe, but this was after he had lost his licence because of a heart attack, and before i started there. The only other old timer there when i started was Ronnie Lynn, been there years.
George Simpson was a smashing gaffer although Peter had taken over by then,Ronnie used to always say, when Ralph Simpson was alive if Peter came anywhere near the yard he’d kick him up the arse, and chase him away, may be true or not,i will say this though it was a bloody good firm to work for,but as we all know things were a lot better then, when you worked for a small firm you were treat a lot better and like everyone else yearn for those times again.

Id say thats true what was said of Peter, ive yet to meet a more arrogant pompus bloke yet

Hi, first post and asking for stuff already! I want to put a model in a small diorama and to save me trawling through the thousands of (mostly!) excellent pics on the site, could anyone post/point me in the direction of pictures of typical yards of the 70’s/80’s? I’m thinking of gate/office/side of building etc. Thanks for the help.

Two views of the National Coal Board South Notts Area Transport yard at South Normanton Derbyshire mid 80s

Not such a big yard as the NCB one of flatman001,this is C W Griffiths & Sons Ltd at Dolyhir on the Welsh Border.Possibly in the 90’s,but the yard was the same in the 70’s,its bigger now.

A bit smaller this time Dave, Brian Harris’s yard (from the book)

Hi flatman,
Forgot your personel, voyager has started a good thread with this,I find old haulage yards fascinating, brings back the memories,we still have a few this way,but a lot of the firms have gone,as have the yards, others have moved to newer and bigger premises on industrial estates.
Cheers Dave.

Part of Roberts of Knightons fleet in their yard.If you go on the Roberts of Knighton thread voyager125,you will see pics of their fleet in the 60’s,put on by atkidave.
Cheers Dave.

Correct John, I had 12 years working there, It was called Winterbank, after a pit that used to be there, there was an explosion at the pit in 1937 which killed seven people.
The shopping centre they built on the site was called McArthur Glen, but I think it is now called East Midlands Designer Outlet

John

Thanks for the replies! In fact the first pic is just the kind of inspiration I need, although the model is a container truck, the feel of the place is just right

This is the model so far

Hi voyager,
If you type burroughs of bressingham into any search engine, it’ll put you onto thier excellent web site with some amazing pictures from the 50s up to thier unfortunate demise in the 90s yard pictures. Hope this helps
