Photos of Trucks from Tasmania and Australia

Thanks for that Dan…
I had a look at Bewicks thread and didn’t really understand what he was saying about posting photos… If it wasn’t for my wife leaving the computer on I probably wouldn’t even fiddle with it… I’m still having trouble with my phone not being attached to the wall with a long cord…I’m not a technophobe… I just cant be arsed…But I’ll give it a go in the future…

First up Volvo F 12 series 1 Globetrotter… no rust … interior complete and other than the drivers seat being a bit worn … all the over head locker doors are still in it and the brown Bry nylon is still all there… and good condition… still running containers round Sydney, 18 speed road ranger… Chinese owner driver does about 10 hours a day… I spoke to him quite often as he used to park up at Hoxley park where we used to over night… He wants $6000 for it… I was tempted, but I’ve seen better… and cheaper…next

Peterbilt… Owner driver running out of Toll Melbourne… it always looks a bit scabby so it fits in quit well with the rest of the Toll fleet…next…

Minus 1 runs a nice FH 700 B double fridge set. He still had to wait 9 hours for a re load after they stuffed up and loaded it for Cairns instead of Geraldton but we eventually got going…He got me on the first hill…next

Good collections of night time insects… could be quit interesting if your a budding entomologist… other then that it’s just annoying having to wash them of all the time…next

I asked the guy what the go was with the big bumper… The guy he bought it of had a thing a about British heavy haulage and liked big stripy bumpers… so he made one… doesn’t get much simpler than that…next

Another Kalara hauling Ammonium Nitrate… BOOM… next

And then there’s the next lot…

DAf-o-matic with my old TIR plate… I had to take it of… It’s a great big magnet for the undesirables… I got pulled into every government check point… OH we were just wondering what the sign on the front was… but seeing as your here any way… log book… weigh check… look at the tyres… how many times have you ■■■■■■ today… next

K1 650 Signature… 18 speed Fuller … mpg… not really my problem…quit efficient at getting 67 ton up and down the road… usually about 850 to 900k’s an evening/night… next…

Fairly hot… somewhere up round Rocky if remember right… hauling bananas…next

The K1 was feeling sick so I got a hire truck for a trip Volvo FM if you like… I’d like to say it got on quit well, but it didn’t… 66 ton going north 63 coming back… the speedo was running 10% under so it only did 93 kph and as it was hire truck the power was screwed back as well… it took an extra hour and a half to do my regular run… the cab was very small inside and the fuel tank was about the size of a shoe box… Certainly not the sort of truck I would choose to do that kind of job… If the boss had phoned the hire company about 5 mins before I would of had an FH 600… but that’s how it was… so ■■■■ it up princess… I get paid by the job not per hour… so that ■■■■■ as well…and it was automatic with no manual over ride…I think there was one but it was overridden…disconnected… next

FM again…next

K2 King cab runs inter state out of Tasmania so we’re both usually away for 4 weeks and back for 1 ( The back for 1 is usually sail back on Saturday night, of the ferry Sunday morning… 400 K’s back to the depot, wash the truck, clean it out locals Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, have Thursady, Friday of and ship out Saturday about 2 in the afternoon for the night sailing …
The K1… they’re about 4 inches higher than a K1 and the floor is almost walk through… Makes a heck of a difference… next…

Collins of Adelaide…where we unload at the fish market they don’t have a bank, so its done with forklifts out the back door… they bought a new electric pallet jack… one of the new short ones so it’s easier to turn round in the fridge… I used it the first night they had it… much better… by a long shot… %&&%$$^ing Collins driver drove it straight out the back of the fridge on the second night… so it was back to the old manual one again… not the kind of thing you look forward to at the end of a 14 hour shift… next

Stripy bumper again… probably the same shot as before…next

Toll have 2 boats on the Tasmania/ Melbourne run…that’s the top deck, there’s room for about 700 containers inside… a sailing each way 363 days per year… they’re usually full every crossing… When we go over we usually sail on the Spirit… it’s about 3 hours faster…9 hours or there about…Next

They had clean towels and a bar of soap… and the end of the toilet roll was folded into a point… no free mint though…

I’ve noticed that there’s been quit a few visitors to this thread… not many comments… feel free to ask about stuff…

Chipboard !!! Horribly slidy stuff, if you don’t strap the bottom packs separately they just slide out from under the top ones… The driver probably wasn’t even doing anything wrong but he’d get the blame for it any way…

Laminated chipboard was the worst! Roundabouts needed to be crept round. Robert

Let’s get you bumped up again

Nice Kenworth o/d rig on the Bruce Highway, going North from Brisbane today

Hi Hugh, I thought that I recognised that lay bye on The Bruce Highway near The Ettamogah Pub when I passed there last week. I noticed that the truck that was parked on top of the pub roof for years is still missing. Have you any idea if they are going to park another one up there or have elf and safety put a block on it.

There was a Kenworth 123 sitting on the roof a shed on Boundary road west Melbourne. It was up there for years… now it’s gone as well…

Jeff…

I took these in Perth/WA two weeks ago. Very impressive…

Hello MushroomMan

Well spotted ! Yes that Kenworth was parked in the layby outside the Ettamogah Pub - I had stopped for a meat pie and use the pub facilities as usual when driving to Sunshine Coast.

To answer your question about the ute on the roof - ( " ute " = utility vehicle for those readers back home)

There have been changes with the Ettamogah Pub with them loosing a High Court case over the use and appearance of the Pub with the Ute on the roof. It seems that it violated some copyright / royalties situation as originally the Ettamogah Pub was a feature in a cartoon series back in the '50’s. Consequently, they have been forced to remove the name, take the ute not sure about the poem on the side - they say they are going to " re-brand " the pub but it seems to have the same tourist attraction as always.

By the way - did you drive for Astran as a subbie at one time back in the 1970’s ?

Cheers Hugh

Hi Hugh, thanks for the info on the pub although it must of been eight years or so when I last had a schooner in there and I actually bought a kite (for the grandkids of course) from that shop at the back of your photo.
No, I never subbed for Astran so maybe you might be thinking of Johnny Holland who lives over in W.A.

Regards Steve.

Hello Steve

Just thought you might have been ex Astran.

I’ve been in touch with John Hollands, who I remember well and have met with Peter Cannon, Tony Soameson (sadly deceased) and Uwe Ploog on trips back to UK.

Anyrate, I’ll get on and get some more photo’s of Aussie rigs, to get back on theme, we seem to be lacking in photos and the owner operator scene with personalised trucks is much how it was back in UK during the '70’s / '80’s heyday.

Thanks for answering

Hugh

I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this - but I wanted to let people who knew Uwe Ploog at Astran know that he died unexpectedly recently. If anyone is able to attend the funeral will be held on Thursday 6 April at 1300 at Eltham Crematorium. Thanks for passing on the news.

So do some of the girls.

Several years ago some of the local Truckies tried to raise a bit of extra money for The Royal Flying Doctor Service so I took my camera along.

The boys from Bandag turned up.

and Bob The Builder.

There were some old ones still making a living.

and some new ones straight from the showroom.

There are a lot more to follow.

Regards Steve.
