Photos of Trucks from Tasmania and Australia

I had Trilex on Swiss. Always tightening them ,always running oval, sheering tyre valves, many, many probs. :unamused:

Some of the 70’s 80’s models had problems but the newer ones don’t seem to be to bad, most have change to 10 stud buds as they are more universal, but there are still loads of trilex about. If they started to spin they would cut the valve of, not a good look in the middle of nowhere.

Its always in the middle of nowhere! Had 'em on a trailer, looked in the mirror while braking downhill on the Ardennes & saw a lovely shower of sparks. The hub was braking the rim kept going ,needed a new star, only place to get one was Germany - arm & a leg! :unamused:
Two things to avoid -American trucks & Trilex wheels!

The biggest thing with spiders and dogs is rust, or the lack of it and a good snug fit. If there’s any kind of ware or rust on the contacting surface on either the wheel or the spider it doesn’t work. We always had to be very carefull when we were painting the hubs and always masked the contact area on the hud. In Ausralia there isn’t as much weather ware, as we don’t use salt on the roads.
Some times if the the wheel or hub is old and has some ware it’ll spin, and that’s usually the last thing it does.
I always thought spiders were dodgy on the steer as they never seemed to go on square and often had a shimmy. For ease of replacement I would go for spiders and dogs, but all other ways a 10 hole bud it better.

Hi fellas
With spider hubs and rims the secret is when a tyre is replaced/changed /rotated retighten the nuts within 20kms and again after in my case about an hour while rechecking the load after that they won’t give any problems , the fronts always take a while and some care to align properly but once again done properly they will give no problems.
!0 studders are fine but a lot heavier until the Alloy rims hit the scene but carting a tension wrench around would be a pain.

In Western Aus and the Northern Territory
A super single on the front with a permit 7ton
Bogey Drive axle 16.5 tonne with permit for export bulk freight 18ton
Bogie Dolly the same
Tri axle 20 ton with Permit 21tons with export bulk freight 23ton [in my day but maybe higher now]
Tri axle Dolly the same.
Of course a $10 permit makes the bridges stronger the roads wider and the power lines higher lol.

Cheers Dave

When the Freight Equalisation Scheme comes in it’ll be the same weights all over, as will the driving hours. So we’ve been told.
