Phone call from boss

i work shifts, earlys +lates, early shift is 02.45 start with lates being any time after 08.00,i am on late shift this week,so there i was sitting at home when i get a call from the boss at 21.00 saying the early driver has had a accident and can you come in and do early shift.i said no because it takes me 40 minutes to get into work witch means a 01.30 rise i dont know about you but i cannot just switch off and go to bed like that and get by on about 4 hours sleep, what would you have done.

Not answered the phone. Caller display and voice mail are wonderful things.

Depends how much the favour boat goes back & forth. Situations like that you might be better off not going to sleep till the next night if you were inclined to do it that is.

Referred him to the recent case where the bosses of a firm were prosecuted for manslaughter after their truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and was killed.

I would have done it but pointed out I possibly would need an extra break. That said I can get by on. 4-5 hours every other night.

Spot on. You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.

I don’t want a scratched back! I want money in my pocket!

You may want a favour one day, Once now and then don’t hurt.

Should be interesting if you need an early finish or a day off at short notice.

Me too, that might be the same.

True. Take your point about needing a proper sleep, but what comes round goes round.

You’ve missed my point. I was agreeing about a proper sleep being preferable, but pointing out that some bosses would hold it aganst you.

In the OP’s case, if I were in that situation much would depend on whether it was the first shift of the week, or it dropped in the middle. When I did nights I found it better to have a short nap (or even none at all) before the first shift, then catch up with a “proper” sleep on the second. Doesn’t work for everyone though.

If on the other hand it was in the middle of a shift pattern then my response would’ve been the same as the OP’s. On the other hand, since the boss may not have known when the OP went to bed (and it varies with night workers) I don’t think it was unreasonable of the boss to ask the question; for all he knew the OP may already have had his sleep.
