Sorry for hi jacking here but i have an amber warning light saying i have a fog light out which is true it does nt work on the offside front. Am i comitting an offence for that as i have been told its not an mot requirement? just for the record this is nt a case of just changing a bulb or a fuse, there is a fault somewhere in the wiring.

The basic rules are, if it’s fitted, it should work.

Put some tape over both front fogs, or covers. Remember, if front fogs are fitted, they’ve got to be turned on to get the rear fog on - which only needs to be on the offside, don’t confuse this as only 1 required though, you can have both or offside, not nearside only.

Wrong Danny… esp with vostapos You have to prove it not them… :wink: fact is the light is on!! evidence is there in front of them, its like anything else whats wrong you have to prove it wasnt etc, this is why its better to try to defect it on way to check point etc, jsut gets you out of it lol, the law is a total farce esp with abs lights its just one big money making racket now.
most of the vostapos aint got a clue they only follow what the book says is right and wrong no common sense comes in to it these day you may get the odd vostapo man what will tell you but most are to eager to hand out pg9 like birthday cards,

If you defect an ABS light then you are admitting you have got a fault. VOSA guidelines and the occasional instruction from the TC expect a NIL defect sheet every day. (A day means the elapsed time between two rest periods)

If you have a generic defect book and every previously completed page says ABS light or ABS fault, then obviously the fault has not just occurred. Most people end up in court or being fined for the things they say when stopped, be polite but only give considered answers.

Someone mentioned that the VOSA guy didn’t know about the 7 mph speed, that is just poor training or not listening, as the information was given to all VOSA staff as far back as 10 years ago.

What is happening is that the vehicle on
board diagnostics attempts to do a static test of the trailer ABS. There are a number of trailer ABS
systems that will not carry out this test and consequently the drawing vehicle will indicate a trailer fault.

When the drawing vehicle begins to move and gets over the system threshold speed (around 15km/h)
the drawing vehicle will then conduct a dynamic diagnostic test, if this is successful the warning lamp

VOSA have issued guidelines to operators and staff about this and it is a very common fault on modern vehicles, it is probably more common this year with the amount of standing water on the roads. A trailer gets dropped off, the exciter rings is oxidised and the pick-up sensor cannot read it. A call to the workshops will have a mobile service van with you and they will charge the company £50 for a 2 minute job.

You have had the best advice form these forums, keep the door locked, stop vehicle, handbrake on and engine/ignition off before giving your name rank and number to the enemy.

Aswell as switching the ignition off, have your driver door locked as you go in cause the ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  are fast at having a look at your dash, the vosa guy was in my face before i knew what was what.

I would nil defect everything in the book, with a tick, when you start, which is fair enough as chances are the ABS is a dynamic fault so won’t come on until a certain speed. I’d keep the defect book open handy with a pen and turn the tick on the ABS into a cross sneakily if you get a ā€˜follow me’ Galaxy in front or directed into a checkpoint.

I never think door locked when driving is a bad idea anyway.

What about an EBS Diagnostic with a number after it (4001- something), it also illuminates an amber warning triangle. We are told by our workshops that this shows uneven brake wear on each side of unit axles and is confirmed it seems to be over 12% wear difference across one or more axles if you go into the computer to check.

Should we be driving with a DIAGNOSTIC showing which is not listed as a WARNING, but also produces amber light?

VOSA have been very unsympathetic to things like yellow ABS warning etc. down to compatibility issue with EBS unit and trailer that’s just ABS. I think someone did tell me they got a letter from the manufacturer stating this was the case and it was not a safety issue but it still didn’t get them anywhere.

Unless you’re able to argue very well otherwise at the roadside I think most will slap you with a ticket for any kind of ABS dash warning.

The ABS light is the reason plod uses tractor units to film you, as they cruise alongside, they are after a picture of the warning lamp :laughing:

I they catch you on the phone, just tell them you were reporting an emergency.

The brakes have either failed or they haven’t.

The police & VOSA cannot have it both ways :wink:
