You get a piece of bicycle inner tube ,connect one end to the N.C.O. and run the other end to the AD-BLU tank, sorted. You can eat and drink on the hoof.

Company I pulled for wouldn’t allow you to pull in anywhere, had to be at one of your drops, we were given our running sheet which detailed what time we took our break etc and where. I heard of only one occasion when one driver pulled into a layby for a waz, as I understood it he never drove a tank again they put him on something else. So it may have been a personal thing to them, they implied it was to do with the “high consequence dangerous goods load” labelling.
Lots of companies now will say no stopping,
I believe Wisemans, Tesco, Morrisons, Lamberts
A bike racing mate of mine works for a fuel delivery company, they do small garages and workshops but also a lot of domestic fuel. He called in yesterday to see us on his way back from a job. He had to deliver some heating oil to this large country house for the swimming pool boiler. When he arrived at the gates they opened electronically and he was looking around for someone to point him in the right direction to the tank. He slid open this glass sliding door and was confronted by a Mr Burns lookalike climbing out of the pool
He said it suddenly dawned on him that he was speaking to a wrinkly naked man and he made his excuses to go out by saying he had left the engine running, why is it never the young fit daughter or wife who is swimming when I arrive he said.

Fair enough sounds like a company policy then.I just cannot see how they could ever impose a no stopping for a pee policy!
can anyone give me information on how to become a petrol tanker driver.Im going to look into doing a ADR course but what happens after that .Ive been driving artics for twenty years, fridge and box work.Any advice i would be grateful
Petrol Tanker work is quite difficult to get a start in, but contact the big boys i.e Wincanton, Exel, BP, there are also smaller outfits who you would probably stand more of a chance with.
A good way to find out who’s doing it, is park outside your local refinery for an hour or two taking names and telephone numbers, I got my start when I did it like that.
It,s also not as well paid as you are probably thinking it is,
You are also chased about all day, they normally expect two drops in a 12 hour shift.
I did not like the job and would not bother with tanks again, but as is always the case in this job I know blokes who love it,
I was told about the jobs on the tankers at Wincanton Nottingham when they shut our B&Q depot down the guys were on £10 an hour days and £12 an hour nights, I didnt go for it myself as i didnt fancy carrying all that petrol or diesel about with the idiots on th eroad these days.
The grass is greener on the other side.I must admit the people giving me advice probably have never been near a fuel tanker.I wonder if there are drivers out there who are satisfied in their jobs with a decent wage earned
never been near a fuel tanker
Well i have, I used to work in a PFS
Some good drivers some bad, some tell you they love the job others do nothing but moan.
Some would refuse to drop a 5000 litre delivery because you were below your ullage figure by 1litre (ie. you had 1 litre too much in your tank).
There are downsides that i saw;
Not a job for a smoker, you cant carry matches/lighters in the cab obvious really.
Standing beside a tanker on a dark winters night in the snow or freezing rain while you wait for the load to drop, is not fun! Trust me i had to stand there with a guy for an LCD once!
The same goes for wrestling with diesel soaked fuel hoses in said rain/Snow.
If you dont like slow trucks, then i beleive fuel tankers are limited to 50.
I too have heard the stories about being paid £60k p/a working well within EC hours. But then havent we all heard that about most jobs
I did it for a few years, though not in the UK. The downside for me was working on the weekends and holidays (including Christmas). A nightshift is also a distinct possibility for a new guy.
It’s a vocational job as apposed to a driving job.

i did it for 9 years and gotta agree, its not all its cracked upto be ,to much pressure ,no mistakes allowed and cold and wet with no shelter, only packed it in 3 weeks ago.unless you can handle the stress of constantly being monitered and checked all the time i wouldn’t bother.for the difference in wages its not worth it.
Back to your original question… Another company to try would be Hoyer based in Huddersfield they are always on the lookout for people with a good track record and if I’m not mistaken they might help with your ADR requirements if they like you. Ask for Iain Kelly he is the HR manager and he can be contacted on 01484 548221.
I hope this helps, good luck.
try talking to their drivers as i belive that the wages
are very good well worth doing the job,

Im satisfied in my job and i like it i just dont like the people running it but funnily enough that seems to happen all the time.
Thanks for your advice.ive got a better idea now of were to start
My apologies in advance for resurrecting an old thread, but I thought why not do this rather than start a whole new one off.
Does anybody know of any of the main operators in the North East, ie, SHELL, ESSO, ASDA, MORRISONS, BP etc that are recruiting tanker drivers?
Dead mans shoes is all im told, but me and a colleague who are well sick at our current place, both with our ADRs want to move on to the tankers.
Any phone numbers, comments, advice etc etc?
Many thanks.
Andy.
I think Stillers (Stiller/Sadler) still have the Phillips/Petroplus contract at Hartlepool.
I dont know anything about wages etc tho…

01469 575186 for asda/dhl/exel and you will get the morrisons number off them. Be prepared to have EVERY move you make under scrutiny by people in an office who dont know anything about the job.

tony,
i work for hoyer, on red fleet (chemicals), enjoy the work, pay is good, and apart from the usual changes in your jobs from time to time, you are usually left alone to get on with it.
