i been thinking. would it be feasible to run a truck with a petrol engine.
petrol is cheaper than diesel, and it’s available at every forecourt.
people bought diesel cars because they were more economical than petrol cars, and diesel was cheaper than petrol.
but you can get about the same mpg out of both fuels nowadays.
so why don’t they make petrol powered trucks?

Petrol engines cannot produce the torque numbers that Diesels can, and in trucks it’s the huge torque figures that actually drag the 44t on it’s back along more than the BHP.
A Petrol engined truck would end up needing to be 1600bhp plus, and would probably do less than 1mpg!

On a like with like comparison there’s no reason why a spark ignition engine, designed with the same bore and stroke dimensions, and overall capacity, running decent levels of forced induction (preferably with supercharger and turbocharger technology combined ),couldn’t be made to provide similar levels of BMEP (specific torque outputs ).Which just leaves the issue of if you’ve got the benefit of spark ignition then surely it’s LPG which would be the better bet for cost not petrol. There is actually spark ignition technology out there which has done exactly that using existing truck diesel engines converted to spark ignition with no large scale losses in torque outputs throughout the range.

No it isn’t feasible or it is but it would be horrifically expensive because:
-
The maximum torque of a diesel engine is low down. The maximum torque of a petrol engine is higher up in the revs.
-
Diesel engines are more thermally efficient than petrol. You should see at least a 25% better MPG out of a diesel than a petrol
but you can get about the same mpg out of both fuels nowadays.
■■■■■■■■. If you’re not getting more fuel economy from a diesel than a petrol you need to learn to drive.
There are (conspiracy) theories doing the rounds of free thinkers that emissions rules are being used to keep mpg figures down, so comparisons along those lines might be pointless !
Diesel is a much more efficient fuel than petrol, now that the problems surrounding the use of Diesel in the relatively small CC engines found in cars have been engineered out it makes you wonder why we still bother with Petrol at all?

The big players are all liking it. I seem to recall Bison in Canada going with it too. In Canoodlia I imagine it would make sense in a way. No waxing/freezing issues
A world first?
I remember, around the turn of the century, Safeways at - was it Hatfield? - running LPG trucks. One problem they had was that there wasn’t enough room for the bigger tanks so they kept running out of gas on the road. You also had to get gloved and suited up to refuel the things.

The fact is compared to LPG diesel is an expensive dirty liability.
I drove gas powered trucks for London Waste. Gutless doesn’t even begin to describe them.
Diesels produce more torque, bhp is nothing without torque. Even if you could produce a petrol engine truck using all the modern day technology it would cost a fortune to produce. Why invest in the new expensive technology when they can simply refine the older technology?

How, exactly?
I once considered going the LPG route on my car, but I didn’t fancy driving my family around inside a bomb. Of course, being a good driver then that accident will never happen will it ? But I worked on RTA recovery for long enuff’ to discover that you can be the bestest driver in the whole wide world, it does not stop you being involved in someone else’s accident.
LPG is cheap 'cos it isn’t yet taxed as high as petrol or diesel, you need to have at least a rudimentary understanding of economics to understand why.
I hope that’s sorted your expensive & liability issues, lets move onto dirty. How, exactly is diesel more dirty than LPG?

burn some diesel and see how much black smoke comes from it, then do the same with LPG.
i agree about the “taxed Yet” thing. they did the same with diesel. people bought diesel cars, then the tax man moved in.

Petrol or diesel can also both make a reasonably good job of being a flammable liability in the event of an accident.
The taxation issue is obviously a big factor in road fuel costs. But LPG will always be the cheapest at the pre tax stage regardless because it’s just a cheap by product with much better long term supply potential compared to diesel or petrol.
LPG (and petrol) is cleaner than diesel simply because the particulates/soot/smoke etc issue isn’t there.

Instead of wishing Trucknet was more like 4chann, why don’t you just stick with 4chann?
& if none of that makes sense to you, don’t bother with 4chann . . . you will fail there like you do here.

Which car in a 3 car pile up do you want to be a passenger in?
The one with a full tank of Diesel, the one with a full tank of Petrol, or the one carrying 20kg’s of pressurised LPG?
