Someone has signed in as Adolf Hitler,on the petition list.

That’ll be Gordon Brown, I understand he uses that name as it is a lot less embarrassing for him than using his own name. :stuck_out_tongue:

I still can’t see it as skilled, you can become a driver C+E after just 3 weeks training with ease, in my younger days I did training for a job that was 9 weeks of intensive training, costing in excess of £10k and that got me to the lowest standard, not even semi skilled. There are a lot of other trades that need more training than us, but don’t have the “skilled” label. All I want is a fare wage for a fare days work, our job doesn’t even need a high standard of education…just common sense and a degree of self discipline. it is a vocation for sure, but there are plenty of muppets out there doing the job, do you think they are skilled? if not you have lost your argument already, because they are doing the job,

3 weeks ? more like 3 days.
Well if you include the rigid test as well that’s maybe a week. It only takes longer coz it’s hard to get the test dates lined up. I realise the rest of it isn’t included in that, like roping & sheeting, and all your basic job skills but basically you’re qualified as soon as you get your licence. What with auto boxes, and drop and swap, you hardly need to know anything apart from which side of the road to drive on, and people still ■■■■ that up.
There is more skill than people realise, but not as much as being a cabinet maker, or an electrician, or even a chef.
I’d settle for a bit more respect.

Is is worth to sign come 1st september another 2pence in fuel duty will be imposed by our great goverment so less drivers should keep the petition in a low rank

As I have now down graded to van driving, I do still hold a class one and think this should be a recognised trade, so I have signed the petition.

sorry double posting.

I have signed the petition too just hope it helps

I dont see that signing this will make the slightest bit of difference? In particular, the way it has been written is hardly going to inspire confidence into any officialdom that reads it. Lets assume everyone on here signs it, what will it achieve? Will it it make us any more 'Professional? No. Will it bring the pay scales up? No. Will anyone in Government take any notice? No.

There’s more to raising the profile of the HGV driver than signing an online petition.

The primary factors of the current situation are;

  1. Duty on fuel
  2. Foreign vehicles using our roads free of charge
  3. Monopoly by large companies driving down domestic rates

There are other factors and of course the recession has a major role in all of this. The government could help on all three counts, by reducing fuel duty, by charging foreign registered vehicles a realistic daily rate. By intervening via the Monopolies Commision the activities of certain large companies.

At the end of this, we may see enhanced rates of pay for drivers, but its a long way to go.

Tiger.

I just can’t understand this petition at all. The Prime Minister does not decide what is a skilled job and what isn’t, and cannot possibly classify truck driving as either.

Lets be realistic its hardly rocket science or brain surgery.
Once you can drive 90% of the job is common sense.
