In the states trucks are doing 65mph I think.
The energy of a moving vehicle is proportional to the square of the velocity. 7070/(5656) = 1.5625 , so that’ll be a 56% increase in the energy to be dissipated in the event of an accident.

Maybe, but the fuel costs are a lesser proportion of the overall transport cost, and in the US, (note; Ive never actually been there) the distances between cities are greater with less density of traffic. Hence Muckles
point about racing from one jam to the next in the UK. Also with their long bonnet rigs (different overall length regs) they are more aerodynamic.
MAWCOURIERS:
For god knows how many years drivers have been restricted to 56mph this in my eyes can be dangerous for a host of reasons but also slows down the UK economy by causing late deliveries ,with Brexit upon us we need faster business growth so all round there is a need to remove 56mph restrictions PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION AND CHECK YOUR EMAIL TO ENSURE FULLY SIGNED THANKS MARK .
Just very quickly skimmed through these pages, and this bs thread.
Mate, are you really that ■■■■ stupid?
You are a classic example of how and why drivers are their own worst enemies.
As for your petition, let me think, how can I put this politely?
Ah yes.
Shove it right up your arse!
I thank you.

I think we’ve found the problem (obvious to some here). Traffic on this rock will prevent us from really seeing any benefit from a raised limit apart from maybe night trunkers. Lots of the stretches of road that would you could use that speed are so heavily clogged by traffic during most daylight hours, as I already said, spend time on the M1 or the M25 or the M6 and you’ll see. Its no good telling how you did it in the 80’s. Times have changed, transport has changed. Too many screw drivers, not enough drivers.

it is also worth noting that the roads in the US are not particularly safe with deaths per capita running at nearly 4x higher than the UK

The speed limit isn’t a target. If the traffic is that bad then 90 kmh is as bad as 60 mph. While in general if it’s safe enough to do 90 kmh then it’s also safe enough to do 60 mph.
As for deaths per capita like France the US has a much larger drunk driver problem while deaths per passenger/vehicle/mile travelled would be a more realistic figure. In this case the idea of ridiculously low truck motorway speed limits is a historic Euro thing as opposed to the English speaking world in general. Not just the US and including here up to the point when limiters were introduced bearing in mind the UK truck motorway truck limit is still actually 60 mph.

The ‘limit’ here is ‘already’ 60 mph the 90 kmh limit is an EU imposed limit by vehicle type approval default.
I think the OP just falls into the Jeremy Clarkson mantra of “I JUST WANT TO DRIVE FAST” and has bolloxs all to do with higher (lets make some more money for the boss) productivity.
I think an interesting solution could be (and bear in mind I have been on the pop all night) would be some sort of link between limiter and drivers card; and maybe for every 20 hours driving you earn one hour of ‘boost’ - a period when your limiter removed. You could use this ‘boost’ period to avoid the elephant race or catch up with your schedule or far far better, just save it up until you’re at the end of your tether, put something like Mony Mony on at full volume and just let it rip.

Calling for 40 + tonners to be able to run at 70 mph isn’t an objective view anyway.Even Clarkson wouldn’t be asking for more than leaving it at the existing 60 mph and using draconian HGV licence penalties to do the job of truck speed limiters.Which would actually be a better situation than what we’ve got.
i won’t support it, happy with 56, and i think it makes perfect sense

I only get that fast down hill with a curry oops sorry with the wind behind me. I’m happy with 52

Nice idea. Save your allowance to get a quick run home at the weekend. But as always someone will use their allowance to hang you out to dry in the outside lane.

“The speed limit isn’t a target.” True, but youve been around long enough to know that isn
t the thinking for many drivers out there. And some regard it as a minimum with a 10% “get away with it” allowance on top.

No
I see this petition is getting the support it warrants … so far 5 nutters have signed up for it
What potential speed do we reckon vehicles would reach if this went ahead with speed limiters also abolished, 85mph plus?
After my drunken reply last night im craving a sausage or two.
Reckon a trip to the co-op is needed and a peak in the ‘weve knocked a quid off coz the stuffs about to go off’ section is needed.
Ill get the wife to drive but not at 70mph.
Anyone fancy sharing a sausage.

No because I don’t know where your sausage has been

My old man’s Volvo FL6 would hit 80mph no problem. Not sure on the power output but it couldn’t be much more than 200bhp. The F16s of the time with 400 plus would sail past like you were going backwards.
Contrast that with todays V8s and FH4s knocking out 500/600/700 plus. My guess is it’d be closer to 100mph depending on the gearing.
It’s never going to happen. Never ever. And nor should it.
