Peter the Plater

Has anyone ever seen a sticker on a European road sign saying “Peter the Plater was here” ?

Nope, but I keep seeing Emma Peal painted on roadside signs in Belgium

Ahh, I was thinking it could be Emma Peel, misspelled :open_mouth:
But that wouldn’t really wash, due to the age difference

And for the benefit of our younger viewers:

question for you inselaffe,
what are those signs on the side of the motorway in germany with quite a fit woman and sometimes a younger fit bird and they are holding their index finger and thumb apart as if to say drivers have small wotsits

I seem to remember a road safety poster of the sort you describe but it was quite a while ago and I can’t remember the exact text.
Although it would have been something along the lines of what you suggest:
Ze big boyz vis ze fast autos and making speeding are heving very small sausage

This topic looks to be heading… err, off-topic… so I’ll give it a helping hand. :grimacing:

We seem to be heading towards a nostalgia thread about German informational posters, so I’ll chuck in a contribution of a quick 2 Pfennig’s worth… (or 2 Groschen if you prefer)

Let’s see who remembers these…
Brummi mit Herz (+ Gemeinsam geht’s besser)
Der Autobahnfink (Abfall hier hinein)

:open_mouth: And for those even older, who remembers the poster (with pictures) about working for Schwarzgeld that creased me in pleats of laughter every time I saw it? :grimacing:

I remember the posters.
They had a logo with something about racers in it.

I cann’t remember any of those but can remember another one: “alles gurte” to remind of you seat belts.
There were plenty jsut cann’t think of any right now.
I also like those emoticons that indicate how much roadworks you have ahead :frowning:   Or is that in A?

Hi HomoFaber, I’m not sure about the emoticon for ‘roadworks ahead’ but I’ve found a piccy of a Brummi for you…

Here’s a pic of a ‘Brummi

IIRC, the ‘Brummi’ character was used to promote road safety and appeared on many different posters in Germany in the 80s.

I’ve also taken a pic of my office bin, complete with an Autobahnfink (Lit = Motorway finch)
This sticker was on just about every public bin in all German motorway services as I recall.
The text tells you not to forget that rubbish goes into the bin.
IIRC, the Autobahnfink character was used by the German motorway authorities for many informational purposes and was heavily featured in informational magazines that you could get for free in the German motorway services.

:bulb: This has given me an idea for a new topic… :grimacing:

They’re quite common in Holland and they’ve now started to use them here in Germany, telling you how long the roadworks are.

Something along these lines:

:frowning: 5kms to go
 2 kms to go
 only 1 more km
 THE END

hi Inselaffe, indeed he is mate, and I enjoyed the music too, so thanks for that.

Do you remember the Autobahnfink and the Schwarzgeld poster? (Or is it only me that’s this old? )

Its okay DD you are not dreaming these were posted all over the german roads
in fact they are fighting Black labour , and finding it on the increase as many firms
bring in cheap labour from other EU countrys

I saw it written on the back of the bog door at the windmill Keskamet ,thats the bog where the bog attendant woman used to give us two sheets of bog paper, so use it sparingly
Also written was

Ah gut skid

 Danish i think.
It was a place we all stopped at. :sunglasses: very friendly parking attendent.

Hi Pete, that’s spot-on mate.

I had the early 80s in mind though, and I only ever saw the Schwarzgeld poster at Aachen.
It was the series of photos that they used on the poster that had me in pleats of laughter, they were so funny!!
Although I understood the German writing, the photos got the point across equally well to those who couldn’t read German.

Hi Dave.
I remember the Autobahnfink.
The Schwarzgeld poster dämmert auch ein bisserl although I can’t remember the actual Inhalt.
Age wise, I think we are in the same boat
(Clue: When I was a puppy I thought loons with platforms was a killer look    )
