Peter Bennie Northampton are the still going?

I was wondering if Bennie were still going as I have not seen there lorry about. Or if anybody have any photo or story’s of Bennie / Barton plant / Brackmills or Edwards bros or Spaldwick . My granddad drove for Edwards bros and then Bennies when Bennies brought out Edwards. Here one of bennie tippers.

I think you will find that it is just Barton now, just off the A6 Buton Latimer and the Brackmills and Barton Plant low loaders are now Rob Masters of Wellingborough.

Are these the ones your looking for.

Rob Masters went bust a couple of weeks ago , all his work taken over by David Watson transport ,

Thank you Stanfield they are the the sort of thing im after .

I’m really after any of the brown Bennie tippers which were the one based at Spaldwick. When Bennie brought out Edwards Bros Bennies had to keep some of lorry at Spaldwick in brown as part of the sale.

I had heard that Rob Master went bust

022.JPGCould be ex bennies, seen at hope construction materials, holme hall quarry, stainton.

I live local to Northampton and it doesn’t ring a bell. Brackmills heavy haulage is still kicking about.

That scania look like it could be ex Bennie it the right colour and has a same sort of body as Bennie have and it on a KX plate

Rob Master brought Brackmill lorry a few years ago now. Weather the Brackmill name will go now David Watson own Rob Master .

Bennies still operate some ironstone quarries, but have axed the haulage fleet. There are several of their last motors running around London. David Einig Contracting of Oxfordshire run many of the last Barton Plant tippers.

Thank you Muckaway. There a company round here in Cambridgeshire runs one of Bartons old tippers.
My Granddad could not believe a company as big as Bennies now only has a few Quarry now

Fasinating thread ,thanks Muckaway for the info on bennies , i was wondering if they were still around as i haven’t seen any in a while ,i can confirm that the one in the picture KX57 USB was definitely one of bennies (they had USC aswell ) i believe 08 reg scanias were the last ones they bought but i stand to be corrected, i can remember seeing the Brown bennie vehicles around but never knew the significance of this.

I tthink Bennies’ stone quarries around Wroxton and Hornton were originally run by Baldwins and Oxfordshire Ironstone Partnership. They had a private railway system from the quarry faces to the crushing plant and quarried the stone to supply amongst others, the Brymbo Steel Works in Wales. Traces of the railway can be seen along the A422 out of Banbury. I think the loco sheds near Hornton are now a small business park but certainly the well built bridges have survived.

I’ve heard sone subbies around here say the Bennie wagons were quickly snapped up; Low sided alloy bodies nean good payload and hard to overload.
Even the Barton ones would be good with their lightweight steel Charltons

Rob Masters never went bust. David Watson made him an offer and Rob simply sold out before things got too bad. Rob has not been well of late and decided enough was enough.
David Watson Transport will keep some of Rob’s fleet, but not the Brackmills trucks, only some of the trailers. Rob’s trucks have been de-liveried but not sure if they will be resprayed red/white or kept blue. Also not sure what will happen to Rob’s premises yet.

Bit of history of the ironstone quarrying.

Google Alkerton Quarry and look on parish news. It seems Bennies are looking to quarry next to the Alkerton tip (old Oxon Ironstone Pit), and extend the landfill.
Using subbed hauliers instead of their own sadly…

Thought I’d give this thread a bump as I’ve been working in the Wroxton area recently and have been looking out for traces of the old iron ore industry.
Oh, and Bennies’ crushed stone is too expensive, compared to other quarries, so I’ve been told.
