Pet hates on the roads

The Dafs, the newer ones anyway, are governed to 70mph.
The older ones will possibly do,occifer,75/77mph.

Obviously we only travel at 70mph  as that is the legal limit in this country.

It doesnt apply to everything on the road but as a general rule road vehicles over 3.49 tonne gvw need a tacho and have to conform to tacho rules.

7.5 tonners can: do 70 mph max and use the outside lane to overtake on a motorway.
Thats all. Oh yes mostly they carry between 3 and 4 tonnes…

IIn our Daf LFs we can sit at 70 all day,[8.170 !! POWER !! ]

!!!

Arn’t 7 1/2 tonners governed to speed and if they are how do they get away with it with the tacho and all.

Speed limiters are not required on 7.5tonners until Jan 2008 although they are currently required on vehicles doing International work

Pet hates on the roads?

7.5 tonner drivers :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously how can a 7.5 tonne truck be classed as safe at 70mph in the outside lane when a coach has to be limited to 65 in the middle lane

And how is it that a transit van or sprinter can travel at 95mph and no on gives it a second glance?

I was out on my bike last Saturday and doing about 110 down a quiet back lane and there was a bloke in a Vito van trying to race me :open_mouth:

I wasnt speeding because it was my day off

All car drivers inside the M25. Either their indicators dont work or is it a new law that once inside the M25 cars dont have to have them■■?. Why do car drivers think that 44T will stop on a sixpence■■?

Thoughts on the above.

A coach is an slc ,self loading carrier  ,and its cargo is free to move about at its own will. Its cargo tends to be on the fragile side too.

If a 7.5 tonners load is moving you are in the seriously brown smelly and sticky stuff!!

Seriously.I dont make the rules.I just try to stick by them.

As for the vans…Okay i will give you my thoughts too.

The company i work for runs 311 Merc Sprinters. A nice van in a straight line, not for nothing is their nickname “spinners”,quick and reliable. We have flatbeds, lwb+medium wheelbase vans and curtainsiders. They carry about 1.5 tonne.ALL ours are tracked. In fact apart from the aunty trannie pickup ALL the fleet is tracked. Some drivers do over 70.I rarely do but i do appreciate the power.I tend to use it to overtake middle lane hogs then go back to where i feel safe. ie the inside lane

The Sprinters bite without warning.Believe me!..The first time one did it to me was on a greasy southbound M1 near Barnsley.I was braking hard to avoid a crunch.Guy in front had his foglights on and started braking.I didnt recognise the brakelights. My mistake. But was doing ok and in no danger untill the back end broke away and thats all she wrote.

When the world settled down again i found i was facing up the hill into the oncoming traffic. And it had ALL stopped!! Nobody hit me or anything.I was just a tad surprised but everso relieved…There was a guy driving 17 tonner with a big grin and clapping…it took me AGES to get the thing onto the hard shoulder. No damage no nothing One lucky Fox

Took me ages to stop emptying my bladder too come to think of it…can you get a prize for the worlds longest pee?? :open_mouth:

Two days later a workmate wasnt as lucky. He spun and a tree joined him in the cab via the bonnet :frowning:

Sprinters? Nice vans that need carefull handling.

What about supermarket trucks that only do 50mph on the motorway?
(I’m not saying I’ve anything against them of course - just purely asking if anyone has).

No problem with it when the roads are quiet. Rest of the time they should do the limit like everyone else as they cause far too much of a bottle-neck. What wrong with getting where they’re going same speed as everyone else and then parking up for half an hour

So you wouldn’t have a problem with two prats causing a bottleneck at 56 then?

The only commercial vehicle that should be allowed to do 70 mph (+ :unamused: )
are car derived vans, focus, astra, etc.

Anything else, including white van man should be governed:

7.5 tonner’s - 56 mph
35cwt Vans - 60
White van man, Transit, etc - 65 mph

Legal speed rises as vehicle size reduces.

Sounds a sensible suggestion

Hang on this is Trucknet. did I say sensible :stuck_out_tongue:

What are 35cwt vans? I didn’t think you got anything between 3.5 and 7.5t.

20cwt in a ton

1016kg

So 35cwt equals 1750kgs, does that refer to payload or GVW? (which would make them inbetween astra vans and transits)

In my day (time warp) the bog standard Transit was the two axle type with a payload of 12 cwt or just over half ton (Imperial). The 35cwt was the one with twin back axles and a payload of just under two ton. 35 cwt or 1.75 ton being GVW.

I disagree. Limiting everything isn’t the way to go. The opposite in fact. Do away with limiters altogether. Works well in the US. Those that want to do 60 can do 60. Those (trollies) that want to do 50 can do 50 and those Paddy’s that want to do 140 can do 140 and the job’s a good 'un. Oh and at the same time, do away with the outside lane ban.

One of my biggest pet hates

[zb]ers in trucks that use the left hand lane for turning right at roundabouts :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp:
Its not [zb]ing rocket science is it sort it out and leave the crap driving to rep man
