Pedestrian killed on A1(M) after being hit by lorry

A male pedestrian has been killed after being hit by a lorry on the A1(M).

Police believe it happened at about 03:20 BST southbound between junctions 59 and 58 near Newton Aycliffe in Co Durham.

Officers received a call from a driver travelling southbound who reported having to swerve to miss a pedestrian walking along the inside lane.

The A1(M) was closed for more than five hours between Aycliffe and Burtree but has reopened.

The male driver of the Volvo articulated lorry is from Bishop Auckland. He was travelling southbound on lane one of the A1(M) one mile north of Junction 58.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

First question that strikes me.
What the hell was he doing there?? Trying to (successfully) kill himself?

Hopefully the driver wont lose his job.

Or worse, be banged up.

He will probably be arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, but that is simply standard Police procedure under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act. However, there is virtually no chance whatsoever that anyone would face any kind of criminal or motoring offence charges if they were involved in a collision with a pedestrian on a motorway.

Yep, understood.

Afaia, it’s illegal for pedestrians to be on a motorway unless in Emergency situations? ie; your car just blew up and you’re getting to safety.

Yes, theoretically you could be at fault if you hit someone on a motorway, as in the example you gave where a car had broken down, and if the truck driver ventured onto the hard shoulder and hit somebody standing there but it is being reported elsewhere that

It is understood he was walking along the inside lane of the southbound carriageway

and if this is the case then it is almost certain that death will be attributed to the pedestrian’s negligence.

He has hit a pedestrian at 3 in the morning probably unlit stretch cant remember, no way would he go to jail for that.

I agree he would be arrested and breathalysed think that is standard procedure. I feel more sorry for the driver than i do the person he hit. This poor guy has to live with this for the rest of his life.

Yes, that stretch is unlit.

A motorist had already phoned the Police to report that he had had to swerve to avoid the pedestrian, and presumably more witnesses will come forward who will have seen him.

It does sound as though he was suffering from some type of mental derangement, whether due to drugs or alcohol or for some other reason.

People do strange things for inexplicable reasons, as in the case of Ursula and Sabina Eriksson en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ursula_and_Sabina_Eriksson who were both hit by several vehicles when they ventured onto the M6 for reasons never properly explained.

All of this was captured on film by a BBC camera crew and it makes for the most bizarre watching.

Those girls were really whacko, remember that clip well, bizarre.

Wasn’t it the M6 at Keele Harry? I agree, very bizarre those twins. A syndrome where they sparked some kind of demon inside each other? One of them got hit quite forcefully by a car but was so wired and hyped up it was like she couldn’t feel pain.

Yes, you’re right, I’ll edit my post, there was a similar accident on the M3 about the same time but not that one, ta.

One of them then went on to murder someone
