Would that be the quarry that is now a landfill site Dave, turn left off of the Hayfield bypass and then left again up the bank? We covered it all with tarmac in the late 1990’s from Ballidon, the JCB knocked my rear mudguard off and I tied it up with rope to get back to the welder at Brassington. However a copper (a dog handler!) stopped me at Newhaven and was going to book me for unsecure rear lights even though they were all working and it was daylight!
I can remember Allinsons running from that quarry. Used to see them pulling out onto the road from that lane. They needed a shunt if they turned for New Mills. That was in the days when they had Foden S83s.
And talking of the Allinsons Fodens, I’m sure someone told me they were called into action at Topley Pike and carted tarmac to the M61 in the late 70s. Always thought it odd they were brought onto the tarmaccing job.
Here’s a stunner for my old mucka Stanny. It’s Peakstone quarry Dove Holes around 1982 and it shows the fabled John Biesty Routeman tipper that was used internally at the time. A lot of people I’ve spoke to can’t recall it so it’s good to finally see a pic of it.
I remember seeing it parked up between via Nova and Bristowes tar plants.
Looks like the Scammell had been rebodied at that time by just looking at that photo Bonkey and also it would have been about 10 yrs old by 1982.The ones we had at Manchester were J.K.& L reg would’nt have thought Staveley would have bought any new ones do you? cheers.
I’m certain this was a mk3 Routeman as I recall it had the rectangular headlights. The ones you mention, were they painted in these colours with the Staveley logo on? I guess it could have been an L reg as they were the later cabs.
Stanfield:
They would have been repainted in Staveley livery and they were all plated at 28 ton at the time.It most likely as you say was one of the L reg
I reckon it were mate. I always used to think it were either on a P or an R plate but L reg certainly seems favourite. It would have been ten years old at that point so it’s road going days well and truly over.
I’m still on the hunt of a ‘proper’ photo of one in the Staveley livery though. Might take a while but I’m sure there must be one somewhere. In the photos that Limey posted some time ago that shows the fleet parked up on a weekend, all you can see are S80s and S83s. Those pics were taken when the T reg Haulmaster was added to the fleet so would’ve been 1979. I’m guessing the Routeman would’ve been based at Hope Street and only came to Dove to collect dust or chippings for Salford. Or to go on tarmac when there were big jobs on. Certainly never saw it come through Buxton unlike the Fodens and other wagons on the fleet.

One of S.E Johnson’s from Darley Dale, not my picture ( off a spanish e bay site)
Good find Pete.
I am pretty sure thats the late Derek Bourne wonder if he had just picked it up at Sandbach or called in for some remedial work.Derek liked his Fodens worked at Longcliffe a good many years until he retired. Mike
