Few to test the old grey matter, two from Alfreton and one for Bonkey and Paul Motyka from Stainton

Barry/Gloves

i can remember that atki wrecker of hazel croft’s very well barry . ian tomlinson drove it up to abington to rescue an arctic which had jacknifed on the a 74 , i followed in a unit to bring the trailer back . when we got there it was 100 quid for a 3 mile tow and all that was wrong was the front offside brake adjuster had spun off . gaffer was not impressed but ian bought us a good supper at the moss cafe on the way home . dave

I can’t recall Wiggy having it at Hazelcroft mate. I do remember seeing it parked up for a long time at Birchenoughs farm near Barmough Clough. You could see it from the road as you passed. It was always parked at the back.

Lovely set of photos Barry. I remember the Barlows wrecker quite well. When me old man had his tanker in for servicing and there was no spare wagons (not very often!) I used to sit behind the wheel pretending to drive it.

Keep 'em all coming mate, they’re brilliant. :sunglasses:

that’s where the atki probably ended up bon key . i was talking about 1964/65 and the old purple fleet . in the photo there is a unit with a tipper trailer which came after i left in 1986 so they still had the atki then . funny thing , when i went back in 89 i was on that unit , what a flying machine !! dave

Blimey, Matlock has changed a lot since those pics Bonkey, and not just the quarry area! Can just see our house in the first pic, only it wasn’t ‘our house’ back then! One good thing is that we are no longer infested with Ta*mac trucks…plus our windows and washing no longer get covered in dust when they blasted.

Pete.

Great pic’s Kelv I was born in the top left of the 1st pic,no in Underwood Terrace not the wood  The Reivers I think were Tarmac Agg’s (not much black showing in the bodies and small extension boards) the HA van, could have been Martin Bentley’s but not sure and the Volvo Graham Redfern or Sam Shaws who were both based at Cawder running dry. When slack you would see them in M.Peak or elsewhere. The two Clydesdales Tony Fox and Derek Fern. I nearly always parked up the ramp on the opposite side. The bin full of aggregate in the 3rd pic was for any Topmix drivers from Clay X or Chesterfield to back load when delivering in the Matlock area as the Cawder plant was still run by RMC so they got this way. Also handy if you needed a bit to make up but not much use for anything else. In the 4th pic looks like Mick Kimptons Mercury in the goods yard with the BR gang bus that always parked there. And the coach could be one of Thornhills Chickens, seem to recall one parking there in the 70’s. This is all open to debate as my memory like a few more on here ain’t what it was,now where am I  Mike.

Thanks for the details Mike. I showed the pic to your lad on FB and he thought it was good as well. Can I ask who the Foden S80 belonged to in the 3rd pic? Was it an OD or company vehicle? I always wondered about that hopper. I can remember the remains of it in the 90s when I used to go regularly to take photos and was confused by it.

I’m guessing the pic was taken on a sunday with all the wagons parked up. Can you provide any details of the wrecked cab near the group of tippers? A lad on FB seems to think it could be a Guy big J and there was a few of them at Cawdor and MP.

Also there’s a small group of 2what appears to be ergo cabs close to the garages but they’re painted white. Any background on these?

Think there were 6 guy tractor units they usually ran to Tarmac batching plants at lofthouse and east ardsley day and night 180 gardners I was told that they were mixer chassis originally perhaps Nigel wood might shed some light

I remember seeing that wagon coming through Spring Gardens in Buxton when I was a kid.
It stands out in my memory as there weren’t too many Fodens like that one round here and it was often coupled to the tank with Tarmac on the side. Thought that was odd with the DS liveried cab.
I think they used to load at Ashwood Dale plant as well as Hopton Wood and Middleton Mine.
Geoff Peach did with his 265RR powered S83 eight legger tanker. He used to fly up the Dale when loaded.

There were two based at Cawdor. The second one was a V plate with the split windscreen & no headboard. The one in the picture was eventually written off when a Micheal Holdsworth 7.5 tonner appeared in front of us in thick fog outside the jug & glass,he was on the wrong side of the road heading towards Ashbourne.Luckily he swerved & just clipped the drivers corner side,no one injured but enough damage to write the old girl off.Its replacement was a new Foden 6x2 with sleepercab which went on the road just before the end of the summer holidays which made me one very happy 14 year old!

Jason the tank
would have been new behind Peter’s f86 on the M plate along with Tony’s

Thanks for that. Also would it have been the one he had behind the atki & did it get a repaint when the new Foden arrived or were they new cause they were white with Derbyshire Stone on em.Thanks

Jason I presume they were new because the mk1 Atkinson had a white tank where has Peter & Eric’s was the dreaded khaki

I still have the FODEN & marathan spec sheets and sales brochures that Peter gave me in 1989 .

Hi Kelv. That S80 could have been Neil Redferns he became an O/D around this period IIRC and took on a Company S80 I think ex East Ardsley or Lofthouse. Those white Ergo cabs I’m sure were built up from parts that arrived in crates on a bit of a Coverment Scheme :unamused: I seem to remember Keith Needham welding these together in the Garages to the right. The Scrap Cab could have been of the Big J that went over at Lofthouse but I could’nt be sure. Tom Shirley could put us wise. That HA van I think is in fact an ■■■■■■. Mike

Tunnel Cement, Padeswood - that brings back some memories; spent a year running red shale into there from the spoil heap at Llay Main for Pimbrooks, over 40 years since! We lived in a caravan on the Llay Main site for the duration of the job.
