limey’s memories of stavely are spot on , which raises a question of the colour of 272 . the only solution could be that it was recabbed , don sie was one for buying cheap damaged motors and recabbing and repairing them . it was definitely an arc cab , you could see the ghost of the lettering on the doors .they had just bought 3 new s80s and needed to expand quickly for the ici work and with the new arctic and trailer on order i think cheap and cheerful was the only option .cheers , dave

There is a great photo in this months Heritage commercials mag of a Derbyshire Stone 400 sed Atki tanker .

It is Dove holes, they have blocked the road out to freedom lol.

The lad driving that Sed Ak lives local to me John, just forget his name though!

Pete.

I’ve just showed the pic to a lad that worked for DS and he thinks it’s Mick Wilmot. Ring any bells Pete?

Few for ole ‘Windy’ from a mutual friend. Photos courtesy of TARMAC.

One more from the files at Ballidon quarry. Unsure where this was taken but could it have been a fete at Ballidon or a nearby village?

Brilliant pics there Bonkey, that last pic may have been at Ashbourne Show? Barry may know if he reads this. The tank (ORA 310J), Geoff Hambleton had new, then he got a N reg S80 and it went down to Meriden where Brian Ray (ex BRS) drove it and managed to knock the cab roof off! Our fitters cobbled it back together by welding on a roof chopped off of a scrap cab, the nearside cab window wouldn’t fit though so Brian had to manage with a sheet of clear polythene flapping about until I took it up to Darlington where it was recabbed as an S40. I remember fitting a new timing chain to the 6LXB engine, the mileometer read well over 800,000 miles plus six years blowing time. When sold off the tank was swapped onto a new chassis and the old chassis cab was bought by a chap running from Croxden Gravel who put a tipper body on it where it did several more years work.

The sweeper I remember well, I took it for test a couple of times and hated driving it from the ‘wrong seat’. it was driven at one time by Steve Allen who came from (I think?) the Longford area. Steve died quite young and Johnny Webb, Ex Staffordshire Farmers, drove it then and also the one that replaced it. I think that either the one in the pic or a later one was sent down to our Mancetter quarry, the chap who drove it used to fall asleep at the drop of a hat and one afternoon, when he had nodded off in the cab, two fitters draped a tarpaulin over the cab. He was still asleep the next morning when they uncovered it!! The chap in the Bedford is, I feel sure, Bob Weywell, the truck was bought new (L reg) and was used internally. Bob tipped it backwards while tipping into a hopper and it ran short of oil and knocked the big ends out. One of my first jobs at Ballidon was putting a new crank in it.

The Top Garage pic from Ballidon days is perhaps posed? When I was there all the trucks were driven in forwards and then out through the other side, however again Barry will have an answer perhaps as maybe that was how it was done back then?

Pete.

Steve Allen only came to Longford to fill up with diesel every night Pete, he drove for Denis Salt when I worked in the garage, he lived on Park Avenue in Ashbourne, here’s a picture of his lorry, we had just had it in the garage for a tidy up & repaint after Steve died, Denis said it was one of the hardest things he had to do, to go & ask Ann, Steve’s widow, for the keys to his lorry. It also felt strange to drive it back (my job) knowing Steve had used it the day before, & before anyone jumps to conclusions that Denis should have left it a few days Ann rang to tell him Steve had died & would he fetch the lorry back off the lorry park .

After it’s repaint a lad called Duncan Cox drove it for a while then Dim Jim had a day or two on it, I drove it for a couple of weeks until Denis put me on a Reiver then Gavin bought it to run his self.

Thank’s for that Rob, I assumed that Steve lived in your neck of the woods with driving for Denis. Duncan was on that Clydesdale when I started. Mention of Jim reminds me that his son was (briefly) a member on here years ago and he pm’d me after Jim passed away asking if I had any pics of the lorries he drove, for either Denis or Bert Webster. I told him that I only had good memories of Jim but no pics so advised him to contact Mick, he replied that he wasn’t really that bothered as he didn’t get on with his dad! Takes all sorts I guess?

Pete.

Few more interesting ones.

Looks like an ex Tilcon body in that bottom pic, or perhaps a recabbed chassis/body? We did have one S39 with that sort of body, WNU 799K driven by Maurice (M.J) Fearn when new, and later by his Brother in Law, the Late Nick Hall. Nick had an accident with it on the A515 near Barleymans place at Cubley and knocked the axle and cab off of it, he went off the road loaded into a field but encountered a concrete track which broke the springs off! It was repaired and fitted with a spare S36 cab we had in the yard, might be the same truck underneath?

Are the Cargo’s Andrew Barker’s, I can’t quite read the writing even by enlarging the pic?

Pete.

They are Barkers’ Fords mate. Parked near his house at Pikehall when new. Before a load of tar had been dropped on at either Ogdens or Ballidon!

I know that reg no. pete, I painted it, drove it, maintained it & learnt my way round in that lorry.

Denis was a brilliant boss to me, oh & he was the only boss I ever had too.
