Could be Topley Pike John, (never been there) but it also looks a little like Wimpey’s Darlton quarry at Stoney Middleton? Certain that Bonkey will know!Good pics though.
Pete.
It is Darlton quarry at Stoney Middleton Pete, the photo has been ‘reversed’ for some reason. I saw it myself some time ago on the net and reversed it and saved it onto a hard drive.
If you look at the black heaps to the right of the pic, that’s the 10mil and 20mil retardamac stock heaps. I think they still make the stuff nowadays but the stockheaps are in a different place.
The quarry, I’m told, isn’t owned by Tarmac anymore; they ridded it off their books a couple of years back at the start of the recession. It’s owned by a firm called BCB coated and they’re based at Nottingham.
The brickworks that used to be on one side of Darlton have been flattened as well. Guess the recession put paid to that (or Tarmac did it before they sold the place on as a going concern to stop rivals getting their hands on it)
That is correct, Beesley Coated Stone owns the tar plant and also I believe the old TILCON plant at Colwick. We used to take dust to the block plant at Darlton from Dene and then sometimes do a load from the tar plant, usually a “stitch up” though and you would find yourself miles from home at about 8 pm and then the gang would decide that they didn’t want the stuff and you had to find somewhere to dump it! Happy days.
Pete.

Can’t tell you Chris, I didn’t move to Derbyshire until 1975 and I think that Wimpey’s were in residence then.
They used to reckon that WIMPEY stood for We Import More Paddys Every Year but I couldn’t possibly comment!
Pete.

I know it was still known as Darlton Quarries in 1966 because I went out as passenger with a mate of mine who worked for Masons with a Seddon 4-wheeler. It was 7/6d a ton from Stoney to Baslow,is it any better now?

The eight legger was what I started on at Sammies, then they put me through my class 1 and 3 months later gave me my first brand spanker, the ECX. that photo was taken by the looks of it on my way down to Sheerness.
Great Longson name gone but not forgotten.

They were up at Longcliffe near Brassington but they went about three months ago. One of them ended up at the foden breakers in Sandbach but i don’t know where the others went. They still run some old ones internal in the quarry.
The tipper and the powder tank both look quite tidy I bet they would wash up quite well.Ive seen some that look worse still out on the roads.
