Chris Webb:
I live in Ashbourne now and I very often see a company from Tamworth called Lloyds running through the town and up the A515 around 1800 to 1900 nightly.I wondered where they would be going using that route from Tamworth?

Have you had enough of those Yorkshire men Chris
Well I were born in Sheffield but brought up in Froggatt Dan,so a bit of a mongrel. We needed to be nearer our son who lives in Chesterfield but couldnāt afford Hope Valley prices .Anyway wife and misen have always liked Ashbourne, and itās ideal for us.Also a good selection of tippers and tankers passing through to interest me.Surprised thereās never been a by-pass?

There is a bypass Chris, we supplied the blacktop and stone for it. It runs from the A52 Derby Road down over the A515 onto the A52 to Stoke. It was put in to route the Alton Towers traffic away from the town as the queues were horrendous in summer, however at a similar time the A50 was opened up to Uttoxeter and Rocester was also bypassed so most of the traffic used that route instead and the Ashbourne one was more or less not needed. However it does need one from the Buxton side, in summer the traffic can be horrendous and when we were on the Charcon dust run going through it fourteen times a day it could make for a very long day at times!
By heck Chris thāart like a flea on a dogās bum with all the hopping about . Loads of news houses going up round Buxton , only six miles from Hope Valley , and we areānt all that posh !

I think itās summat to do with keeping one step ahead of HMRC Dave Cheers Dennis.
These pics (not mine though) popped up on Facebook recently. Taken at Charcon Industries Hulland Ward works where we ran 6 or 7 loads of dust to daily from Ballidon quarry. Foden on ramp will be Peter Gallimoreās truck, he āranā the Charcon run for over 20 years and decided how many loads were needed and where they were allocated as there were several different plants in the yard. FHL 565V was Steve Skinnerās from Biggin which he had from new. Iām pretty certain that the side view is of mine GWJ 823V which I took over when it was 4 years old as it was the only one fitted with an extended Foden mirror arm on the nearside which was viewed through the windscreen instead of the side window and never needed cleaning, unlike the normal ones.
Sniffy:
These went down well on the Foden page on Facebook, assume from the same quarry you mention ?

Yes at one time they had their own fleet of tanks and tippers to bring in raw materials, they also had a Foden fitted with the gearbox that was designed and made by Reg Knowles at Tansley. One of their drivers, Sid Handley, later came and drove a tipper at Ballidon after Charcon got rid of their own trucks.
Butlers had this tanker second hand, sure it came from a company in the peak district.
Can some one jog my memory,a chap on here did tell me a long time ago but I canāt remember.
This sorry picture shows it after itās working life & then as a water bowser.
It was written off after a mishap in the quarry.
At the time of this picture Butlers had been taken over by Tarmac in 1979.

Does Steve Skinner live in Biggin? I thought he was still in Youlgrave.
